The key difficulty is not the objective itself, which is local per vertex, but the combination of two aspects: the graph grows online up to 200,000 edges, and we must also be able to reproduce a consistent optimal solution from a compressed representation of it.

The constraints already rule out any per-query recomputation over all edges. Even a linear-time recomputation per update would lead to roughly 4e10 operations in the worst case. That forces a fully incremental structure where each new edge only slightly modifies the state.

A subtle edge case comes from the fact that the objective depends only on degrees per vertex but the hash depends on edge indices. A naive idea is to independently decide each edge color greedily based on endpoints, but this fails because choices interact through parity constraints at vertices. Another failure mode is recomputing an optimal coloring each time but forgetting that the later reconstruction must match the exact hash, which forces consistency in how multiple optimal solutions are selected.

The objective decomposes over vertices, which suggests looking at what a single vertex prefers. For a vertex with degree d, the contribution |r(v) - b(v)| is minimized when the incident edges are split as evenly as possible between the two colors. If d is even, perfect balance is possible. This transforms the global problem into pairing edges at each vertex: every vertex wants to pair up incident edges into red-blue pairs, and if one edge remains unmatched, it creates a unit cost. Since each edge is incident to exactly two vertices, the problem becomes a global consistency problem: we must choose a pairing structure so that each edge participates in at most one pairing at each endpoint.

The standard way to view this is to assign each edge a direction-like structure in an auxiliary system: each vertex tries to “cancel” edges two by two, and leftover unmatched edges propagate constraints. In a bipartite graph, this can be handled incrementally by maintaining a dynamic forest-like structure over edges using DSU with rollback or parity maintenance, but a simpler observation exists here: we never actually need full matching inside adjacency lists, only parity information.

At each vertex we only care about parity of incident edges processed so far. When a new edge arrives, it flips parity at both endpoints. If we maintain a stack of “unpaired” edges per vertex, we can greedily pair them whenever possible. The resulting structure ensures that all but at most one edge per vertex is paired, achieving optimality.

The hash requirement forces an additional constraint: we need a deterministic way to decide which edges become red. Once we decide a pairing system, we can define a canonical rule: in every pair, one edge is red and the other is blue, and the choice is fixed by order of appearance. This ensures consistency and allows reconstruction.

The challenge is that when queries ask for reconstruction, we must output a valid optimal coloring matching the same implicit pairing structure used for the hash. This is achieved by storing enough information about pairings during updates so that we can replay the assignment.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We maintain for each vertex a stack of currently unpaired incident edges. We also maintain a global record of pairings.

  1. For each new edge (u, v), we first try to match it with an existing unpaired edge at u. If such an edge exists, we pop it and form a pair. Otherwise, we push the new edge into u’s stack.

This ensures that u always keeps at most one unmatched edge contributing to parity. 2. We repeat the same logic at v. If the edge was already paired at u, it is no longer active and we skip v. Otherwise, we attempt pairing at v as well.

The idea is that an edge can be resolved at either endpoint, and once paired it should not be reconsidered. 3. Each time we form a pair of edges, we record one of them as red and the other as blue in a fixed order (for example, smaller index red, larger blue).

This deterministic rule is essential because multiple optimal solutions exist, and we must be able to reproduce one consistently. 4. The hash after each insertion is computed by summing 2^i over all red edges modulo 998244353. Since only newly fixed edges can affect this sum, we maintain it incrementally. 5.
