The tree size goes up to 5000 nodes. That rules out any solution that enumerates edge subsets directly, since that would already be 2^(n-1) possibilities. Even any approach that tries to recompute diameters naively per subset is far beyond feasible.

Instead of thinking in terms of which edges are cut, we flip perspective: we root the tree and process bottom up, maintaining how far information can propagate upward without violating the diameter bound.
When we combine two child subtrees through a parent, the only way a violation can happen is if two deepest paths from different children meet and exceed length k. This reduces the problem to managing how many “open path states” are allowed to coexist through a node.
At each node, we are effectively counting how many ways we can merge child configurations such that all partial paths passing upward have length at most k, and any two paths merged through the node do not exceed k when combined. This leads to a DP where each subtree contributes a distribution of possible “depth profiles”, and we combine them using a knapsack-like convolution over depths, with pruning based on k.

We define dp[u][d] as the number of ways for subtree u such that there is exactly one active path going from u upward into its parent, and this path has length d. The case d = -1 conceptually represents that no path is passed upward (all components are closed inside the subtree).
