Now the twist: we are allowed to “slow down” edges. For each query, we are given a budget x. We may distribute this budget across edges, increasing edge weights arbitrarily, as long as the total added weight across all edges does not exceed x. After modifying weights, we recompute the shortest path from 1 to n, and we want to maximize that shortest path value.
So each query asks: if we can spend up to x total units increasing edge weights, what is the largest possible shortest path distance from source to target?
The important structure is that this is a two-player interaction on a shortest path: we choose how to distribute extra cost to make the shortest path as large as possible, while the path itself will always adapt adversarially by recomputing the minimum route.
The constraints are what make the solution nontrivial. The graph is tiny in vertices, n ≤ 50, but potentially dense. This strongly suggests that all-pairs structure or dynamic programming over intermediate vertices is feasible. However, the number of queries is large, up to 100000, so any per-query shortest path recomputation or flow solve is impossible.
A naive idea is to treat each query independently and try to simulate how adding weight affects shortest paths. That immediately runs into trouble because the effect of increasing one edge depends on which shortest path becomes active, and that can change discontinuously as x grows.
A subtle edge case arises when multiple paths tie for shortest distance. If a naive approach assumes a single fixed shortest path and only increases edges along it, it will fail.
For example, if two disjoint paths from 1 to n both have equal length initially, increasing capacity on edges of only one path is insufficient because the other path becomes the new bottleneck.
Another failure mode appears when increasing an edge makes a previously non-shortest path become optimal; the identity of the shortest path changes as we invest budget, so any static-path reasoning breaks.
Approaches
The key difficulty is that we are not optimizing over a single path, but over the value of a shortest path under edge weight perturbations. This is naturally a min-max problem: we distribute budget to maximize the minimum over all s-t paths of their total weight.
A brute-force approach would be: for a fixed x, treat the problem as a continuous optimization over edge increments, and try to simulate how shortest paths evolve as we assign increments. One could imagine repeatedly identifying the current shortest path, pushing weight onto its edges, and updating until budget is exhausted. However, shortest paths change structure after each modification, and in the worst case there are exponentially many distinct shortest paths that become optimal as weights change. Even if each recomputation takes Floyd-Warshall or Dijkstra, this becomes far too slow across 100000 queries.
The structural breakthrough is to reinterpret the problem as a parametric shortest path problem. Instead of thinking about distributing increments explicitly, we switch perspective: for a candidate answer value T, ask whether it is possible to increase edge weights so that every path from 1 to n has length at least T, using total budget ≤ x. This transforms the problem into a feasibility check over a threshold.
This feasibility check can be modeled as a dual problem on shortest paths. The core idea is to track how far each node can be pushed away from the source if we spend budget optimally. Because n is small, we can precompute shortest path structure and then express the growth of the shortest path as a piecewise linear function in x. Each segment corresponds to a set of “tight” edges forming the current shortest path DAG.
As x increases, the shortest path value increases linearly with slope determined by how many edges of the current shortest path structure we can “affect” before the shortest path switches to another structure. Each time a new path becomes competitive, the slope changes.
This leads to a global observation: the answer as a function of x is convex and piecewise linear, with breakpoints corresponding to changes in the set of shortest paths. Since n is only 50, the number of such structural changes is bounded by O(n^2) after careful construction using all-pairs shortest paths and sensitivity analysis on edge tightness.
We compute the initial shortest path distances using Floyd-Warshall. Then we analyze, for each edge, how much it contributes to maintaining shortest paths and derive candidate slopes. By organizing these events, we can build the function f(x) giving the maximum achievable shortest path for any budget x. Once this function is precomputed, each query is answered by locating the correct segment.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Compute all-pairs shortest paths using Floyd-Warshall. This gives baseline distances between every pair of nodes, in particular dist[1][v] and dist[v][n]. This baseline represents the state when x = 0.
- For every edge u → v, determine whether it lies on some shortest path from 1 to n by checking whether dist[1][u] + w + dist[v][n] equals dist[1][n]. This identifies the “tight” structure of the current shortest path geometry.
- Build the subgraph consisting only of tight edges. In this subgraph, every path from 1 to n is a shortest path. The key idea is that only these edges matter for determining how perturbations propagate through optimal routes.
- Observe that increasing any non-tight edge does not affect the shortest path immediately, so all useful budget is effectively spent on tight edges until some of them become non-tight.
- Model the effect of increasing edge weights as increasing costs along edges in the tight subgraph until an alternative path becomes competitive. This induces a change in the shortest path structure, which corresponds to a breakpoint.
- Compute all potential breakpoints by simulating when an alternative path overtakes the current shortest path. Because n is small, enumerate transitions between shortest path DAG states induced by removing or weakening a tight edge.
- Between consecutive breakpoints, the shortest path value increases linearly with slope equal to how much budget can be converted directly into shortest path growth without changing optimal structure.
- Precompute these segments as pairs (x, value), forming a monotone piecewise linear function.
- For each query x, binary search the segment and evaluate the linear expression.
Why it works
At any fixed state of edge weights, the shortest path is determined entirely by a set of tight edges satisfying equality in the shortest path equations. As we increase weights, only these equalities can be broken, and each break induces a discrete change in which paths are optimal. Because the number of vertices is small, the number of distinct shortest path structures is bounded, and each structure corresponds to a linear regime in the objective function. The algorithm essentially enumerates all regimes and stitches them together, ensuring that no possible change in optimal routing is missed.
