For each query, we must decide whether there exists some walk from a start city to a destination city such that every consecutive segment of roads between two rest stops has length at most k.

The constraints force us into a global preprocessing solution. With up to 2 × 10^5 nodes and queries, any per-query graph traversal is impossible. Even a single BFS per query would be far too slow. We must compress the structure so that each query becomes a near constant-time check after preprocessing.

A subtle difficulty is that the path is not constrained to be simple, so one might incorrectly assume we need shortest paths or distance queries. That is not sufficient. The constraint is on the maximum gap between rest stops along some walk, not the shortest path distance.

A few edge cases expose where naive reasoning fails. If there are no rest stops at all except possibly endpoints, then any path longer than k edges becomes impossible even if alternative detours exist, because detours do not help reduce maximum consecutive non-rest edges. Another failure mode is assuming the unique tree path between a and b is always the only relevant structure; in reality, detours only matter insofar as they allow insertion of rest stops.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is to treat each query independently. We would try to check whether there exists a valid walk from a to b that never traverses more than k edges without hitting a rest stop. One could attempt a BFS or DFS state that tracks the current node and how many steps have been taken since the last rest stop. This state-space approach is correct because it explicitly encodes the constraint.

However, this explodes immediately. Each node has k possible "streak lengths", giving O(nk) states. With k up to 2 × 10^5, this becomes completely infeasible. Even if k were small, repeating this per query would multiply the cost by v, making it hopeless.

The key structural observation is that rest stops partition the tree into regions that behave independently. Any valid travel must move from rest stop to rest stop, never exceeding k edges between them. So instead of thinking about arbitrary walks, we can think in terms of a derived graph whose nodes are rest stops (plus possibly endpoints), and edges represent whether two rest stops can be reached within k steps in the original tree.

This transforms the problem into connectivity under a distance constraint: we want to know whether a and b lie in the same connected component of this derived structure when augmented appropriately.

The missing ingredient is how to compute connectivity efficiently under a distance threshold in a tree. The standard trick is to use a DSU (disjoint set union) over nodes, but we only union rest stops that are within distance k along the tree. The challenge is that distance is tree distance, and checking all pairs is impossible.

This is resolved using a tree traversal with a multiset-like maintenance of active rest stops. We root the tree, compute distances, and maintain for each node whether it is within k distance of some rest stop in its subtree or processed ancestor region. A more efficient and standard solution is to do a BFS-style multi-source expansion from all rest stops simultaneously, but with a twist: we only propagate distance up to k, effectively labeling all nodes that are within k of any rest stop. Then we collapse connected regions of such labeled nodes using DSU, which allows us to answer whether endpoints are connected through "safe corridors".

Finally, each query reduces to checking whether both endpoints belong to the same DSU component after this construction.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We construct a structure that captures which nodes can be traversed without violating the k-step constraint between rest stops.

  1. Run a multi-source BFS starting from all rest stop cities simultaneously. For each node, compute its minimum distance to any rest stop. This distance represents how far Bessie is from safety.
  2. Mark all nodes whose distance to the nearest rest stop is finite; more importantly, we use this distance to restrict valid traversal zones.

The correctness depends on the fact that any valid walk can be decomposed into segments between rest stops, and each such segment lies entirely inside one of the DSU components constructed from k-bounded propagation.

Why it works

The DSU components encode maximal sets of nodes where every pair is connected by a walk that never requires more than k consecutive non-rest edges. Any valid vacation path can be broken at rest stops into independent segments, each of which must lie inside a single component because otherwise it would require crossing an edge that violates the k limit. Conversely, if both endpoints are in the same component, we can stitch together valid segments through rest stops without exceeding the constraint, since each union step guarantees feasibility within the bound.
