With up to 200,000 nodes and edges, any approach that recomputes shortest paths (like running BFS or Dijkstra for every candidate edge) would be far too slow. Even trying all pairs of special nodes would be infeasible since k can also be up to n, leading to O(n^2) possibilities.

A few important edge cases expose why naive thinking fails. If 1 and n are already connected by a unique shortest path and all special nodes lie far away from it, adding an edge between them might not change anything at all. On the other hand, if special nodes lie along or near shortest paths, the added edge can create a powerful shortcut that bypasses large sections of the graph, significantly reducing distance in unexpected ways.

Another tricky situation occurs when multiple shortest paths exist from 1 to n. A naive approach might assume we only need to block one path, but in reality, the added edge can create a completely new shorter route that was not part of any original shortest path tree.

Approaches

A brute-force idea is straightforward: try every possible pair of special nodes, add an edge between them, and recompute the shortest path from 1 to n using BFS (since edges are unweighted). This is correct because it directly simulates the problem statement.

However, this immediately becomes infeasible. There are up to k special nodes, so k² possible edges. For each edge, recomputing a BFS over a 200,000-node graph costs O(n + m). The total complexity becomes O(k² (n + m)), which in the worst case is astronomically large and cannot pass.

The key observation is that we do not actually need to simulate every added edge. Instead, we should understand how a single added edge affects shortest paths.

Let distA[v] be the shortest distance from node 1 to v, and distB[v] be the shortest distance from v to n. These can be computed with two BFS runs.

Now consider adding an edge between two special nodes u and v. Any path from 1 to n that uses this edge has the form: go from 1 to u, take the new edge to v, then go from v to n, or the reverse direction. This yields a candidate path length of:

distA[u] + 1 + distB[v]

or symmetrically

distA[v] + 1 + distB[u]

So the best improvement from a chosen edge is determined entirely by these distance values.

The problem becomes: choose two special nodes u and v to maximize the shortest path after adding the edge. Since adding an edge can only decrease or preserve shortest paths, we want to choose the pair that minimizes the improvement in the shortest path, i.e., we want to avoid creating a strong shortcut between regions where distA is small and distB is small.

This reduces to sorting special nodes by distA and greedily pairing them while tracking best possible combinations using a two-pointer or prefix maximum strategy over distB values.

The structure that unlocks the solution is realizing that the only meaningful interaction between special nodes is through their (distA, distB) pairs. The graph itself disappears after preprocessing shortest distances.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We transform the graph problem into a two-distance optimization problem.

  1. Run BFS from node 1 to compute distA[v] for every node v.

This captures how early each node appears along shortest routes from the start. 2. Run BFS from node n to compute distB[v] for every node v.

This captures how close each node is to the destination. 3. For each special node s, build a pair (distA[s], distB[s]).

This compresses all graph structure into two scalar values per special node. 4. Sort special nodes by distA in increasing order.

This ordering aligns nodes by how quickly they are reachable from the start, which is crucial for reasoning about cross-effects between early and late nodes. 5. Sweep through the sorted list while maintaining the maximum distB value seen so far.

At each position i, we consider pairing node i with some earlier node j. The best candidate is controlled by the largest distB among previous nodes, since that maximizes the second half of the path. 6. For each split point, compute a candidate answer using:

distA[j] + 1 + distB[i] for j before i

and track the maximum possible shortest path. 7. The final answer is the minimum between the original shortest path distA[n] and the best value obtained after adding the edge.

The reason this works is that any optimal added edge only needs to consider endpoints among special nodes that lie in extreme positions with respect to distA and distB. The sorting ensures we examine all structurally relevant pairings without explicitly trying them.

Why it works

Every shortest path that uses the new edge decomposes into two independent shortest-path segments connected by that edge. The cost is fully determined by distA and distB values at the endpoints. Since these distances already encode all optimal routes in the original graph, no additional structural information is needed.

By sorting on distA, we ensure that when we consider a node as the second endpoint, all possible valid first endpoints that could maximize the combined expression have already been processed. The maintained maximum over distB guarantees we always test the best complementary partner.

This ensures that every candidate optimal path using one added edge is represented exactly once in the sweep.

The BFS section is standard shortest path preprocessing in an unweighted graph. Running it twice gives all distances needed to evaluate any candidate added edge without re-running graph search.

The core compression step is the construction of (distA, distB) pairs for special nodes. Once this is done, the graph is no longer directly used.

The sweep logic relies on maintaining the best possible partner on the left side of the sorted list. The variable max_db stores the largest distance-to-n among processed nodes, which corresponds to maximizing the second half of the path expression.

Finally, we compare against the original shortest path because the added edge is optional in effect, it may not improve the optimal path in a way that increases the shortest distance.
