The constraints are tight: up to 200,000 nodes and up to 1,000,000 queries. This immediately rules out any per-query traversal or recomputation over the tree. A naive approach would recompute all pairwise distances inside [l, r] for each query. For a range of size k, that is O(k²) distance computations, and each distance query via LCA is O(log n). In the worst case, k can be n, leading to roughly n² log n operations per query, which is completely infeasible.

A more subtle failure case comes from trying to “greedily” pick nearest neighbors in label order. Tree distance has no relation to label adjacency, so nodes with consecutive labels can be extremely far apart, while two nodes far apart in label space can be very close in the tree.

For example, consider a star tree centered at 1, with all other nodes connected to 1 with weight 1. If labels are arbitrary, say 2 and 3 are both leaves, then dist(2, 3) = 2, but dist(2, 100000) is also 2. Any assumption about label proximity reflecting tree proximity breaks immediately.

So the challenge is to support many range queries over labels, while extracting a global minimum over a metric defined by the tree.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is straightforward. For each query [l, r], enumerate all nodes in that range and compute the minimum distance over all pairs using LCA. This is correct because it directly evaluates the definition. However, if a query contains k nodes, it requires O(k²) pairs, and over all queries this becomes catastrophic.

The key observation is that we do not need all pairs, only the closest pair in a metric space. In many geometric or metric problems, the closest pair tends to be “locally stable”, meaning it survives aggregation if we maintain enough representative points per segment. Here, the tree metric allows us to compute distances efficiently via LCA, and we can build a segment tree over the label axis.

Each segment tree node stores a small set of candidate vertices that are sufficient to recover the closest pair inside that segment. When merging two segments, we compute the best cross-pair among their candidate sets and then compress again to a fixed small size by keeping only points that are likely to participate in optimal answers.

The subtle structural fact we rely on is that in a tree metric, the closest pair inside a set can always be “certified” by a relatively small boundary set of points extracted from a hierarchical decomposition. In practice, maintaining a small candidate set per segment works because any optimal pair must survive through at least one merge step in the segment tree, and thus both endpoints must be preserved as candidates in some ancestor segment.

Why it works is tied to how segment tree aggregation preserves optimal pairs. Any pair of nodes that forms the global minimum inside a range must be split at some segment tree boundary.
