For each integer i from 1 to x, we are asked a very specific question: among all walks that start at 1, end at n, and use exactly i edges, what is the minimum possible total weight of such a walk. If no such walk exists for a given i, its contribution is zero. Finally, instead of reporting all answers individually, we sum all these values over i from 1 to x and output the result modulo 998244353.
The important subtlety is that we are not looking for simple paths. Reusing edges and vertices is allowed arbitrarily, so the structure is closer to constrained-length walks rather than shortest paths. The constraint “exactly i edges” is the key difficulty, because it introduces a second dimension beyond the usual shortest path problem.
The bounds immediately rule out any approach that tries to compute answers independently for each i. The value x can be as large as 10^9, which makes any per-query dynamic programming over i impossible. At the same time, n is at most 2000 and total m across tests is at most 5000, which suggests that any per-step graph DP over vertices is feasible only if we avoid iterating over all i explicitly.
A naive but natural idea is to define dp[i][v] as the minimum cost to reach vertex v using exactly i edges. This works conceptually, but it cannot be iterated up to x since x is too large. Even computing dp for all i up to x is infeasible.
A more subtle failure mode appears if one tries to “cap” i at something like n or m. For example, in graphs with negative cycles this might be needed, but here weights are positive, so cycling only increases cost. However, the key issue is that even though cycles are expensive, they might still be used to adjust parity or edge count when x is large, so restricting the length is not obviously safe.

The main difficulty is that “exactly i edges” turns shortest path into a layered graph problem over an extremely large layer count.
Approaches
The brute-force solution is to explicitly compute dp[i][v] for all i from 1 to x. Each layer transitions over all edges, so for each i we relax all m edges and update n states. This gives O(x · m) time per test case, which is completely impossible when x can be 10^9.
The key observation is that we do not need all dp layers independently. Instead, we care only about the best possible cost to reach n with exactly i edges, and we ultimately sum over i. This structure strongly suggests linear recurrence behavior over i, because transitions are linear and depend only on previous layer.
We can rewrite the problem as a min-plus linear recurrence over vectors of size n. Each edge contributes a transition matrix, and applying one step corresponds to multiplying by a min-plus adjacency operator. So dp[i] is obtained by applying the same transformation i times.
This is a classic setting where exponentiation by squaring applies, but in the min-plus semiring and with an additional aggregation over all i from 1 to x. Instead of computing all powers, we can compute a combined structure that tracks both the effect of repeated squaring and the cumulative contribution of intermediate powers.
The standard trick is to treat the transformation as a matrix T where T[u][v] = weight of edge u-v, and we compute powers of T using min-plus multiplication. Then we maintain not only T^k but also the sum over powers up to k. This is analogous to prefix sums in matrix exponentiation, where each state stores both “best after k steps” and “sum over all steps up to k”.
Because n is small (≤ 2000 total across tests, but effectively per test manageable), we rely on sparsity of edges and careful min-plus multiplication. The exponent x up to 10^9 is handled in O(log x) layers using binary lifting.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- We model each step as moving along an edge, so one application of the graph transition transforms a vector of distances over vertices. This means we are repeatedly applying the same operator x times starting from the vector where only dp[0][1] is zero.
- We define a structure that represents not only the transition after k steps, but also the best results for all step counts up to k. This allows us to accumulate contributions to the final sum while exponentiating.
- We initialize a base transition corresponding to taking exactly one edge: for every edge u-v with weight w, we can move between u and v with cost w.
- We define a multiplication operation between two such transition structures. Composing two blocks of lengths a and b gives a block of length a+b. The composition must consider all intermediate vertices and take minimum cost paths.
- Alongside the composition, we also maintain a second value representing the cumulative best costs for all lengths inside the block. This is updated by combining prefix contributions from the left block and right block, shifted appropriately by lengths.
- We apply binary exponentiation on the transition structure for x, decomposing x into powers of two. Each time we square, we combine structures and update both transition and cumulative sum.
- After processing x, we extract the cumulative contribution from start vertex 1 to end vertex n, which gives the required sum over all i.
- If no path exists for certain lengths, their contributions remain effectively infinite and are ignored in the min operations, contributing zero in the final sum.
Why it works
The algorithm relies on the fact that “exactly i edges” defines a semigroup under concatenation of walks. Every walk of length i can be uniquely split into concatenation of smaller walks, and the cost function is additive over this split while minimization distributes over composition via min-plus convolution. The prefix-sum augmentation preserves information about all intermediate lengths, so exponentiation does not lose per-length contributions. This guarantees that after decomposing x into powers of two, every valid walk of any length up to x is counted exactly once with its optimal cost.
