Since each edge contributes once to a vertex sum, flipping all edge weights incident to a vertex changes parity in a controlled way. If parity were inconsistent, the system would be unsatisfiable immediately.

A few failure cases are worth keeping in mind:

A triangle with inconsistent totals is the simplest trap. If one vertex demands a sum that cannot be balanced by the other two, naive local adjustments will keep oscillating without convergence.

Another failure pattern arises in trees. Even though trees have no cycles, greedy leaf fixing can break earlier decisions unless we carefully propagate constraints in one direction.

Finally, graphs with cycles allow flexibility, but also introduce the possibility of hidden dependencies where local consistency does not guarantee global feasibility unless the construction explicitly enforces conservation of flow-like quantities.

Approaches

A brute-force view treats every edge weight as an unknown variable and writes one equation per vertex. This produces a linear system with n equations and m variables. In principle, one could solve it using Gaussian elimination. However, the structure is sparse but not matrix-friendly in a straightforward way, and n and m up to 100000 make cubic or even quadratic elimination infeasible. Even optimized sparse elimination becomes complex due to fill-in.

The key observation is that the system is not arbitrary linear algebra. Each edge variable appears in exactly two equations, once positively for each endpoint. This is the signature of a flow conservation system on an undirected graph.

This means we can think of assigning arbitrary values along a spanning tree, and then using back-edges to correct inconsistencies. A more structured way to see it is to root the graph, propagate partial requirements upward, and use edge weights to transfer surplus from children to parent.

The brute-force approach fails because it tries to solve globally. The optimal approach works because it enforces consistency locally while guaranteeing that all constraints collapse correctly through a DFS tree.

The spanning tree becomes the backbone: once tree edges are fixed to satisfy subtree demands, every non-tree edge is used only as a balancing tool, not as a primary carrier of constraint.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We transform the graph into a rooted spanning tree and then propagate demand values upward.

  1. Build an adjacency list and choose any node as root, typically 1. We will treat the graph as a rooted tree for the purpose of propagation, even though it may contain extra edges.
  2. Run a DFS to compute a parent-child structure. We also keep track of the spanning tree edges and separate them from non-tree edges. This separation is important because only tree edges will carry structured flow in the construction.
  3. Perform a postorder DFS where each node computes a “balance” value defined as its own demand plus contributions received from children. The idea is to interpret this as surplus that must be pushed upward to the parent.
  4. For each tree edge from a child v to parent u, we assign the edge weight so that it exactly transfers the child’s accumulated balance upward. Concretely, if a child subtree has net requirement x, we assign the edge weight so that v sends x to u, effectively canceling v’s need.
  5. After processing all children, the parent absorbs the sum of these flows. This ensures that every subtree becomes locally consistent, leaving only the root to accumulate the global residual.
  6. At the root, we check that the final accumulated value is zero. If it is not zero, no assignment can satisfy all constraints, because there is nowhere further to push remaining imbalance.
  7. Non-tree edges are then assigned weights that preserve vertex sums without affecting subtree balances. Since tree construction already satisfies all vertex constraints structurally, these edges can be set to zero or used symmetrically without breaking equations.

Why it works

The construction maintains a conservation invariant: for every node except the root, after processing its subtree, all internal edge contributions cancel exactly with the assigned weights, leaving a single outgoing flow toward its parent equal to the subtree’s net demand. This turns the graph constraint into a single accumulation at the root.

Since every edge is accounted for exactly once in a parent-child transfer, and every vertex equation is satisfied by construction of these transfers, the final assignment must satisfy all constraints simultaneously. If the root imbalance is non-zero, it represents a global inconsistency in total demand, proving impossibility.

The code begins by building an adjacency list with edge indices preserved, because we must output answers in original order. A non-recursive DFS is used to define a spanning tree and record parent relationships.

The key array is bal, which stores the current net demand of each node. As we traverse nodes in reverse DFS order, we process children before parents. Each child’s balance is pushed onto the connecting edge, and the parent’s balance is adjusted accordingly. This simulates transfer of demand upward through the tree.

One subtle point is that we never explicitly use non-tree edges. In this construction, they are implicitly assigned zero weight, which is valid because tree propagation already satisfies all vertex equations; extra edges do not change net sums if set to zero.

The final feasibility check ensures that the root has no leftover imbalance, which would indicate that the total sum of demands over the graph is inconsistent with any edge assignment.
