For each query, we take a contiguous range of vertices from l to r. Inside this range, we are asked to count how many subsegments [x, y] are “good”, meaning that if we restrict the graph to only vertices x through y and keep all edges whose endpoints lie inside this interval, the resulting induced subgraph is bipartite.

A subgraph being bipartite is equivalent to saying it contains no odd cycle. So each query is effectively asking: among all intervals fully contained in [l, r], how many induce a bipartite subgraph.

The constraints are large: n, m, and q are up to 3·10^5. This immediately rules out any per-query quadratic or even linear scan over all subsegments. Even O(n^2) total work is far beyond feasible, since there are O(n^2) subsegments in the worst case. The solution must preprocess and then answer queries in roughly logarithmic or amortized linear time.

A subtle edge case is when a single edge connects far-apart vertices in the order, because then a subsegment that includes both endpoints might suddenly become non-bipartite only when combined with other edges forming an odd cycle. Another tricky case is when the graph is already bipartite globally but local restrictions inside a segment create a conflict; bipartiteness is not monotone in the interval boundaries.

For example, consider a triangle on vertices 1,2,3. The segment [1,3] is not bipartite, but all of [1,2], [2,3], [1,1], [2,2], [3,3] are valid. A naive approach might only track edges inside the segment and miss that interactions across edges can create contradictions only when both endpoints are included.

Approaches

The brute force approach is straightforward: for each query [l, r], enumerate all subsegments [x, y] inside it and, for each, construct the induced subgraph and check bipartiteness via BFS or DFS coloring. There are O(n^2) subsegments per query in the worst case, and each bipartite check costs O(n + m) in the induced subgraph. This leads to O(n^3) behavior per query in the worst case, which is completely infeasible.

The key observation is that we are not dealing with arbitrary graphs inside segments. The constraint that the graph has no even simple cycle implies a strong structural property: each connected component behaves almost like a tree with possible odd cycle structure, and more importantly, contradictions in bipartiteness can be tracked incrementally as we extend segments.

The standard breakthrough for this problem is to process vertices in increasing order and maintain the earliest left boundary where a conflict appears. For each right endpoint r, we want the smallest l such that [l, r] is bipartite. Once we can compute this for all r, each query becomes a counting problem over valid left endpoints.

This turns the problem into maintaining a dynamic bipartiteness structure under insertion of vertices in order, using DSU with parity. Each time we add vertex r, we add edges to already-active neighbors and maintain whether a contradiction occurs. If a contradiction appears, we move the left pointer forward until the structure becomes valid again.

This produces a two pointers / sliding window structure that yields, for every r, a minimal bad boundary L[r]. Then a segment [x, y] is valid if and only if x ≥ L[y]. Counting valid subsegments becomes a prefix summation problem.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process vertices in increasing order while maintaining a structure that supports bipartite consistency inside the current window.

1. Maintain DSU with parity

We use a DSU where each node stores parity relative to its parent, encoding which side of the bipartition it belongs to. This allows us to merge constraints of the form “u and v must have different colors”.

2. Maintain a sliding window [L, R]

We expand R from 1 to n. For each new R, we add all edges (u, R) where u < R. Each edge imposes a parity constraint.

If adding an edge creates a contradiction, we know the current window is not bipartite anymore.

3. Fix violations by moving L

When a contradiction appears, we increment L until the structure becomes consistent again. As L moves, we remove vertices conceptually by resetting state or by rebuilding DSU checkpoints (handled via rollback or incremental rebuilding depending on implementation style).

The important idea is that each vertex is added and removed at most once, so total complexity stays linear.

4. Compute earliest valid left boundary

For each R, we store L[R], the smallest index such that [L[R], R] is bipartite.

This transforms the problem into a constraint on valid left endpoints.

5. Answer queries using prefix counting

For a query [l, r], we count all pairs (x, y) such that l ≤ x ≤ y ≤ r and x ≥ L[y].

For fixed y, valid x are from max(l, L[y]) to y. So we sum contributions over y in [l, r].

This can be answered with a Fenwick tree or prefix sums over precomputed L values.

Why it works

The DSU maintains a consistent bipartite assignment over the active window. The sliding window invariant is that at every step, all edges fully contained in [L, R] are satisfiable under parity constraints. When a contradiction appears, it is always due to inclusion of L, and shifting L is sufficient because earlier vertices are the only source of irreconcilable constraints. The absence of even cycles ensures that once a vertex is excluded, no hidden even-cycle dependency reintroduces the same contradiction later.

The DSU stores parity relationships so that every edge enforces opposite colors. The union function detects contradictions when two vertices already in the same component demand opposite parity but already have fixed parity difference.

The sliding window logic tries to extend the right boundary and repairs inconsistencies by moving the left boundary. The array L stores the minimal valid left boundary for each right endpoint.

The query loop directly applies the definition of valid subsegments, summing how many left endpoints are allowed for each right endpoint.

The reconstruction step inside the repair loop is expensive conceptually but illustrates the core idea; in a full solution it would be replaced by rollback DSU or a more efficient amortized structure.

Edge Cases

A key edge case is when the graph consists of a single odd cycle. For vertices 1,2,3 forming a triangle, the algorithm sets L[3] to 2 or 1 depending on reconstruction. The correct behavior is that any segment containing all three vertices is invalid, but all proper subsets are valid. The sliding window ensures that when the third edge closes the cycle, the left boundary shifts so that at least one vertex is excluded, breaking the cycle.

Another case is multiple overlapping cycles. Since the graph guarantees no even simple cycles, contradictions always correspond to odd-cycle interactions, and removing earlier vertices is sufficient to restore bipartiteness, preventing oscillation of L.
