A brute-force approach would model the full game state: current positions of both tokens and the set of visited indices. From a state, we branch over all valid moves of the current player, recursively simulating both players until termination, and take a minimax value. This is correct but completely infeasible because the visited set alone has $2^n$ possibilities, and even restricting structure still leaves exponential branching over move sequences.

The key observation is that the visited structure never branches arbitrarily. Each position is visited exactly once, and moves always advance forward. This means the final outcome is equivalent to constructing an ordering of positions $3 \dots n$, where each position is assigned to exactly one player, respecting that each player can only “skip forward” up to 4 positions from their current frontier.

So instead of simulating states, we reinterpret the game as a greedy construction problem on a line where each player maintains a frontier index. At any time, a player can pick any unvisited position within the next 4 cells of their frontier, and once chosen, that position becomes part of that player’s territory and advances the frontier only if it was the current frontier.

This reduces the problem into a two-player optimal selection game over a sliding window of size 4, which is amenable to dynamic programming with bitmasking over local states: only the relative configuration of the next few positions matters.

At each step, the state can be represented by the current positions of both players, but since both only move forward and each step consumes one position globally, the distance between frontiers is bounded in a small range. This allows compression into a DP over differences and local availability masks.

We iterate from left to right, maintaining DP over whether a position is taken and by whom, while tracking how far each player has advanced. Transitions only depend on at most the next 4 positions, because no move can skip beyond that local horizon.

This leads to a bitmask DP where each state encodes which of the next few positions are already taken and whose turn it is, and transitions try assigning the next available position to the current player or skipping if impossible, maximizing score difference.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process positions from left to right and maintain a dynamic programming state describing what the next few positions look like relative to each player’s reachable range.

  1. We define a DP over a window of size 4 ahead of each player’s current frontier. Each state stores whose turn it is and which of the next positions are already taken.
  2. For a given state, we consider the current player’s legal moves. A move consists of choosing any unvisited position within the next 1 to 4 indices of their current frontier.
  3. Each choice transitions the state by marking that position as visited and adding its weight to that player’s score difference.
  4. If no valid move exists for the current player, we transition to the other player without changing the board state.
  5. We memoize states because identical configurations of the next few positions and turn produce identical future outcomes.
  6. The initial state has both players at positions 1 and 2, and positions 1 and 2 are already marked visited.
  7. We run DP until both players are stuck, returning the final score difference.

The critical idea is that although the global board is large, the decision power of each player is constrained by a constant-size frontier. Anything beyond 4 steps ahead is irrelevant because it is unreachable in one move, and earlier decisions will already have resolved access to it.

Why it works comes from an invariant: at any time, the only positions that can influence the next move are those within 4 steps of either player’s current position. All earlier positions are fixed and no longer affect feasibility. Since the game always progresses forward and never revisits indices, the DP state fully captures all relevant information needed to decide optimal play.
