When Bob stands on a vertex, his next move depends on both the structure of the tree and what has previously been written on that vertex. The first visit writes L and moves left, the second visit overwrites to R and moves right, and the third visit erases and sends him upward to the parent. After that, the cycle repeats.

We are asked, for many queries, to simulate this process for exactly k moves starting from a given vertex v, but with the guarantee that k is strictly less than the time needed to escape to the root. So we never actually reach the absorbing state at vertex 0, which removes complications related to termination.

The constraints are large: up to 3e5 vertices and 4e5 queries overall. A naive simulation that literally updates the tree state per move would require O(k) per query, and since k can be as large as 1e9, this is completely infeasible. Even a full per-query simulation is impossible because queries are independent but share the same implicit infinite state machine over the tree.

A subtle edge case is that the process is not a simple traversal. A vertex can be visited multiple times, and its outgoing direction depends on a cyclic local state. For example, starting at a node whose left child is a leaf, the first visit forces a left move, but the next time the same node is visited the direction changes entirely. A naive DFS intuition breaks because the path is not fixed.

Another failure mode is assuming monotonic movement toward the root or always alternating left and right in a predictable pattern. The “erase to parent” step introduces backtracking that depends on how many times a node has been visited, which depends on the full history, not just the current position.

Approaches

A direct simulation maintains the state of every node and performs k transitions per query. Each transition is O(1), but k can be up to 1e9, so the worst-case complexity becomes O(q · k), which is far beyond limits.

Even if we try to cache transitions from each node in a fixed state, the difficulty is that the state of a node is not just local but depends on how many times it has been visited in the current execution. Different queries start from different nodes, so there is no global shared state evolution.

The key observation is that although the global state evolves, each vertex follows a deterministic 3-phase cycle whenever it is visited. This means the behavior can be modeled as repeated structured excursions along the tree edges: from a node, Bob repeatedly goes down to children until hitting a leaf, then returns upward, and these excursions repeat in a pattern similar to an Euler tour, except that direction decisions depend on visit parity modulo 3.

Instead of simulating moves, we precompute the entire deterministic traversal order of the process if we start from every node, but only up to the point where returning to the root becomes relevant. This leads to interpreting the process as walking on an implicit directed graph whose nodes are pairs (vertex, state), where state is 0, 1, 2 representing empty, L, R transitions.

The crucial simplification is that each query asks for a prefix of a deterministic walk on this expanded state graph. Algorithm Walkthrough

We model each vertex v as having three internal states representing how many times it has been used in the current cycle. We define a function that, given (v, state), returns the next position after one move.

No step depends on information outside the encoded state, so correctness follows from equivalence of transition systems.
