Problem Understanding
We have two arrays, a and b.
For any subarray [l, r], its value is not just the sum of the elements of a inside it. We also add b_l and b_r, the values attached to the two endpoints.
If the subarray consists of a single position, both endpoints are the same, so its value becomes:
$$a_l + 2b_l$$
Queries update either a[p] or b[p]. The interesting query asks for the maximum possible sum of the values of two non-empty disjoint subarrays completely contained inside a range [l,r].
The two chosen subarrays may have arbitrary lengths, but they cannot overlap.
The first thing to notice is that the answer is not simply "best subarray + second best subarray". The endpoint bonuses create interactions that make the usual maximum-subarray machinery insufficient.
The constraints are the real challenge. Both n and the number of queries are up to 2·10^5. A single query may ask about an interval almost as large as the whole array. Any solution that scans the interval during a query is immediately too slow. Even O(√n) per operation would be uncomfortable. The target is roughly O(log n) per update and per query.
Several edge cases make naive state definitions fail.
Consider:
a = [0,0]
b = [100,100]
The best answer on [1,2] is obtained by taking the two singleton subarrays:
[1] = 200
[2] = 200
answer = 400
Any formulation that only tracks ordinary subarray sums misses the doubled endpoint contribution.
Another subtle case is when all values are negative:
a = [-5,-5]
b = [0,0]
The answer is:
(-5) + (-5) = -10
We are forced to choose two non-empty subarrays. States that silently allow selecting nothing will incorrectly return 0.
A third trap is when the optimal solution uses one long interval and one singleton:
a = [10,-100,10]
b = [0,100,0]
The best choices are:
[1,1] = 10
[2,2] = 100
rather than any large contiguous structure. The segment tree must preserve enough information to mix intervals of different shapes.
Approaches
A brute-force solution would first compute the value of every subarray inside the query range.
For a range of length m, there are O(m²) subarrays. Then we could try all pairs of non-overlapping subarrays, giving O(m⁴) possibilities. Even after precomputing subarray values, checking all pairs still costs O(m⁴).
With m ≈ 2·10^5, this is completely infeasible.
A more refined observation is that the value of a subarray can be rewritten as
$$(a_l+\cdots+a_r)+b_l+b_r$$
The middle contributes only ordinary prefix-sum structure. The only special part is the treatment of the two endpoints.
This strongly suggests an interval DP that tracks which endpoints have already been chosen.
The key idea is to model a subarray as a path that starts by collecting a left-endpoint bonus, traverses a segment accumulating a, and finishes by collecting a right-endpoint bonus.
Once written this way, combining intervals becomes very similar to the classic segment-tree DP for maximum subarray sum. The difference is that we need enough states to describe partial progress through constructing two disjoint subarrays.
The elegant solution is to store a small max-plus matrix in every segment-tree node. Matrix multiplication automatically performs the DP transitions when two neighboring segments are merged.
The matrix has five states representing progress through the construction of two subarrays. Merging two segments becomes max-plus matrix multiplication, which is associative. That makes it ideal for a segment tree with point updates and range queries.

Algorithm Walkthrough
The entire solution is based on representing every position by a transition matrix.
We use five DP stages.
State 0 means nothing has been started.
State 1 means the left endpoint bonus of the first subarray has been chosen.
State 2 means the first subarray has already been completed.
State 3 means the left endpoint bonus of the second subarray has been chosen.
State 4 means both subarrays have been completed.
The state number never decreases. Every transition moves forward or stays in the same state.
Matrix interpretation
For a single position i, define:
$$A=a_i,\qquad B=b_i$$
The allowed transitions are:
$$0\to1 : +B$$
starting the first subarray.
$$1\to1 : +A$$
extending the first subarray through this position.
$$1\to2 : +A+B$$
ending the first subarray here.
$$2\to3 : +B$$
starting the second subarray.
$$3\to3 : +A$$
extending the second subarray.
$$3\to4 : +A+B$$
ending the second subarray.
We also allow every state to remain unchanged with value 0.
These transitions form a 5×5 max-plus matrix.
Segment representation
For a segment, its matrix represents the best value obtainable while scanning the entire segment from left to right.
Entry (i,j) stores the maximum gain obtained when entering the segment in state i and leaving in state j.
Merging segments
Suppose segment X has matrix M1 and segment Y has matrix M2.
Scanning X followed by Y corresponds exactly to max-plus multiplication:
$$M = M_1 \otimes M_2$$
where
$$M[i][j] = \max_k (M_1[i][k]+M_2[k][j])$$
This works because after finishing the left segment in state k, we continue through the right segment from the same state.
Associativity follows from associativity of max-plus matrix multiplication.
Building the segment tree
Each leaf stores the matrix corresponding to one array position.
Internal nodes store the max-plus product of their children.
Processing updates
When a[p] or b[p] changes:
- Rebuild the matrix of leaf
p. - Recompute matrices on the path to the root.
Only O(log n) nodes change.
Processing queries
For range [l,r]:
- Collect the segment-tree matrices covering that interval.
- Multiply them in left-to-right order.
- Let the resulting matrix be

M[0][4].
State 0 means nothing has been selected before entering the interval.
State 4 means two complete non-overlapping subarrays have been constructed.
The maximum value stored in that transition is exactly the required answer.
Why it works
The five states describe every possible stage of constructing two disjoint subarrays while scanning positions from left to right.
A transition from state 1 to state 1 means the current position belongs to the interior of the first subarray. A transition from 1 to 2 means the current position is its right endpoint. The same interpretation holds for states 3 and 4 for the second subarray.
Because states only move forward, the second subarray cannot begin before the first one ends. That automatically enforces non-overlap.
Each position contributes exactly the quantities required by the definition of subarray value: endpoint bonuses are added when entering or leaving a subarray, and every included position contributes its a value through the extension transitions.
The matrix for a segment stores the optimal value for every possible pair of entry and exit states. Max-plus multiplication correctly concatenates neighboring segments, so the matrix of a queried interval describes all valid ways to build two subarrays inside that interval. The transition from state 0 to state 4 corresponds precisely to constructing two complete non-overlapping subarrays.

The leaf matrix encodes every action that may occur at a single position. Staying in the same state has value zero, which allows positions to be skipped.
The merge function performs max-plus matrix multiplication. Since the matrix size is fixed at five, each merge costs only 5³ = 125 operations.
Range queries use the standard iterative segment-tree technique. Two accumulators are maintained because segment-tree fragments are collected in different orders from the left and right sides. Preserving left-to-right multiplication order is crucial. Reversing it breaks the DP semantics.
All values are stored as 64-bit scale integers. The maximum answer can be around 4·10^14, so Python integers are more than sufficient.

This example shows why local greedy choices are insufficient. The best first interval is not necessarily part of the best pair.
