Problem Understanding

Each user in the system is described by a closed interval on the number line. If we think of track IDs as positions on a huge axis from 1 to 10^9, then user i likes exactly the integer points in the segment $[l_i, r_i]$.

A user j is called a predictor of user i if j’s segment fully covers i’s segment. In other words, every track liked by i is also liked by j, meaning $l_j \le l_i$ and $r_j \ge r_i$, with j not equal to i.

For a fixed user i, we look at all its predictors. A track x is strongly recommended for i if two conditions hold. First, i does not like x, so x lies outside $[l_i, r_i]$. Second, every predictor of i does like x, meaning x lies in the intersection of all predictor segments.

So for each i we are effectively interested in the intersection of all segments that contain $[l_i, r_i]$. If there are no such segments, the answer is 0.

The key difficulty is that predictors depend on containment in both directions of the segment, so a naive comparison between all pairs already suggests an $O(n^2)$ structure per test case. With total n up to 2×10^5 across tests, any quadratic interaction between pairs is too slow.

A subtle edge case appears when multiple identical segments exist. Each segment is a predictor of the others because containment holds both ways. A naive solution that removes “self” incorrectly or only considers strict containment can miscount predictors.

Another tricky situation happens when the minimal containing segment is not unique. If two different users define the same smallest enclosing interval, the intersection is that interval itself, and forgetting duplicates leads to incorrect empty intersections.

Finally, users with no predictors must output 0, even though their “intersection over an empty set” is mathematically the entire line. This convention must be handled explicitly.

Approaches

A direct approach checks, for every user i, all other users j to determine whether j contains i. That gives the full set of predictors. Once we have this set, we compute the intersection by taking the maximum of all left endpoints and the minimum of all right endpoints, then subtract the user’s own segment. This is correct, but it costs $O(n^2)$ containment checks per test case in the worst case, which is infeasible.

The key observation is that containment depends only on ordering by endpoints. If we sort intervals by increasing left endpoint, then among all intervals that contain a given interval i, only those with smallest left endpoint among valid candidates matter for tightening the intersection on the left side. Symmetrically, among those that contain i, only those with largest right endpoint matter for tightening the right side.

This reduces the problem to computing, for each interval, the best enclosing interval on the left boundary and the best enclosing interval on the right boundary under the constraint that the interval must fully cover i. That constraint is equivalent to restricting attention to intervals with $l_j \le l_i$ and $r_j \ge r_i$.

We can process intervals in sorted order and maintain a data structure keyed by right endpoint that allows us to efficiently track, among all intervals with $l_j \le l_i$, the maximum right endpoint and also query constraints relative to $r_i$. With a sweep over left endpoints and a Fenwick tree or segment tree over compressed right endpoints, we can support prefix maximum queries.

The trick is to separate containment into two monotone conditions and ensure that when we query for a fixed i, we only consider valid j satisfying both constraints.

Once we can, for each i, determine the intersection over all its predictors, the answer is simply the length of that intersection minus the length of $[l_i, r_i]$, clipped at zero.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Sort all intervals by increasing left endpoint. This ensures that when we process an interval i, every potential predictor j with $l_j \le l_i$ has already been seen or can be efficiently accounted for in a prefix structure.
  2. Coordinate-compress all right endpoints so we can store them in a Fenwick tree or segment tree. This is necessary because right endpoints can be up to 10^9.
  3. Build a data structure that supports inserting an interval’s right endpoint and querying the maximum right endpoint among all inserted intervals. This structure represents all intervals with left endpoint ≤ current.
  4. Sweep through intervals in sorted order by left endpoint, inserting each interval into the structure as we go.
  5. For each interval i, we need to find all j such that j contains i. The condition is $l_j \le l_i$ (handled by the sweep) and $r_j \ge r_i$. To enforce the second condition, we query the structure for all inserted intervals and consider only those whose right endpoint is at least $r_i$. We compute the maximum right endpoint among those valid j, which gives the right boundary of the intersection.
  6. To correctly compute the left boundary of the intersection, we repeat a symmetric sweep from right to left, maintaining minimum left endpoints among intervals with $r_j \ge r_i$. This gives the tightest left bound of all predictors.
  7. If no interval qualifies as a predictor for i, we output 0. Otherwise, we compute the intersection $[L_i, R_i]$ from the two sweeps, and the strongly recommended count is $(R_i - L_i + 1) - (r_i - l_i + 1)$, clipped at zero.

Why it works

The algorithm decomposes containment into two independent monotone constraints. The sweep ensures one constraint is enforced by construction, while the Fenwick or segment tree enforces the other. The invariant is that at each step, the data structure represents exactly the set of intervals whose left endpoints are valid for containment, and within that set we can extract extremal right endpoints that define the intersection of all predictors. Since intersection of intervals is determined only by extremal endpoints, maintaining those extremal values is sufficient to reconstruct the exact strongly recommended set.

The first sweep constructs, for each interval, the maximum right boundary among all candidate predictors. This captures how far the common intersection can extend to the right.

The second sweep mirrors the logic to capture the minimum left boundary among predictors. Together, these two values define the intersection of all predictor segments.

The final subtraction removes the user’s own segment since strongly recommended tracks must lie outside it.

Edge Cases

A key edge case is when multiple users share the same interval. For input like:

every user is a predictor of every other user. The intersection is [5,7], but since each user already owns all tracks in it, the strongly recommended count is 0. The algorithm handles this because both sweeps see identical extrema and subtraction removes the full interval.
