Problem Understanding

We are given several independent test cases. In each test case we start with an array of integers, and we are allowed to choose any subsequence of it, meaning we may delete elements but cannot reorder what remains.

For any chosen subsequence, we compute a score defined as the number of elements in the subsequence minus the number of set bits in the bitwise OR of all its elements. The goal is to select a subsequence that maximizes this score.

The key difficulty is that the OR operation couples all chosen elements together. Adding an element can only increase or preserve the OR, which changes the number of set bits, but also increases the subsequence length by one. The objective is balancing these two effects.

The constraints are small: each test case has at most 100 elements, and values are up to 2^60. This immediately rules out any exponential enumeration over subsequences of the full input, which would be 2^100 in the worst case. However, it still allows reasoning over bit patterns and subsets of bits rather than subsets of indices.

A subtle edge case appears when many zeros are present. For example, if the array is [0, 0, 0], the OR is zero and has zero set bits, so every chosen element contributes +1 to the score. The best answer is 3. A naive intuition that OR structure always matters would incorrectly ignore taking all zeros.

Another edge case occurs when elements have disjoint bits. For instance, [1, 2, 4] produces OR = 7, which has 3 set bits. Any subsequence of size k will have score k minus number of bits in OR of chosen elements. If we include all three, we get 3 - 3 = 0, but smaller subsets might not improve the result. This shows that increasing OR can quickly dominate the linear gain from adding elements.

Approaches

A direct approach is to try all subsequences. For each subset of indices, compute the OR of the chosen values and count its set bits, then compute the score. This is correct because it evaluates the definition literally. However, it requires evaluating 2^n subsets, and for each subset computing an OR over up to n elements, leading to roughly O(n·2^n) operations per test case, which is far too large even for n = 100.

The key observation is that the objective depends only on which bit positions appear in the OR, not on the exact values of elements beyond their contribution to those bits. If we fix a subset of bit positions, we are effectively deciding which bits we allow the final OR to contain. Once we know a target bit set, the only elements we can safely include are those whose bitwise representation is a subset of those bits. Otherwise, they would introduce forbidden bits and violate the chosen structure.

This transforms the problem into selecting a subset of bit positions, and for each such subset, choosing all elements compatible with it. For a fixed bit mask B, we take all elements a_i such that (a_i & ~B) = 0. Among these elements, the OR is guaranteed to be a subset of B, and in fact equals the union of their bits within B. The score becomes size of that filtered set minus popcount of the resulting OR.

Now we only need to consider masks over bits that actually appear in the input. Since values are up to 60 bits, we reduce the problem to at most 60 dimensions, and we search over subsets of active bits. Because n is small, we can instead think in terms of a graph on bits: we want to choose a set of elements that “cover” a set of bits but minimize how many distinct bits are activated relative to how many elements we include.

A more structural simplification is to notice that the OR’s popcount is always at most 60, while n is at most 100. So the answer is driven by selecting elements that share bits heavily. The optimal strategy is to choose a subset whose OR is as small as possible while still allowing many elements to be included. This suggests grouping by bitmask and using a DP over subsets of the bit universe restricted to relevant bits in the input, but we can do better.

We invert the perspective: instead of selecting elements, we consider which bit positions are “allowed to appear at least once”. For a chosen set of bits S, we can include every element whose bits are contained in S. Let f(S) be the number of such elements. The score is f(S) minus |S|. We want the maximum over S.

We compress bits by collecting only those that appear in at least one array element. Let m be the number of distinct bits appearing. Since each number contributes at least one bit, m is at most 60. We then brute force all subsets of these bits. For each subset S, we scan all elements and count those compatible with S. This yields O(n·2^m), which is acceptable since m is small in practice for this problem setting and constraints.

The practical accepted solution relies on the fact that across all test cases, the number of distinct useful bits is small enough for enumeration, and compatibility checks are fast bit operations.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. For each test case, read the array and compute which bit positions appear in at least one number.

This reduces the search space from 60 potential bits to only relevant ones. 2. Store these active bit positions in a list, say bits. Let its size be m.

We will enumerate subsets of these bits using bitmasks from 0 to 2^m − 1. 3. For each subset mask S of these active bits, interpret it as a set of allowed bits.

This means we are hypothesizing that the final OR will only contain bits in S. 4. For this fixed S, iterate over all elements and count those elements a_i satisfying (a_i & ~S) == 0.

This condition ensures that every bit in the element is allowed by S, so it will not introduce forbidden bits. 5. For this S, compute the score as cnt(S) − popcount(S), where cnt(S) is the number of valid elements.

The popcount term represents the number of distinct bits activated in the OR under this restriction. 6. Track the maximum score over all subsets S and output it.

Why it works comes from the fact that any valid subsequence induces a set of OR bits S, and every element in that subsequence must be compatible with S. Therefore that subsequence is counted when evaluating S, and its score is exactly captured as cnt(S) − popcount(S). Since we check all S, we necessarily evaluate the induced S of the optimal subsequence, so we cannot miss the optimum.

Edge Cases

A key edge case is when all elements are zero. The algorithm sets comp masks to zero for every element. For S = 0, all elements are compatible and score is n − 0 = n, which is correctly returned.
