A full binary tree of depth $d$ is extremely rigid: it has exactly $2^d - 1$ nodes, and every internal node has exactly two children. The key idea in the problem is not whether the current tree already has that shape, but whether we can extend it by adding extra nodes and edges to embed it into such a perfect structure, after choosing an optimal root.
So after every prefix of insertions, we need the smallest depth $d$ such that the current tree can be completed into a perfect binary tree of depth $d$, or report that no such completion is possible.
The important constraint signal here is the total sum of $n$ over all test cases is only $5 \cdot 10^5$, which strongly suggests a linear or near-linear amortized solution. Anything that recomputes properties like diameters, DP on trees, or re-rooting per query would be too slow.
A subtle edge case is that the answer can decrease or become impossible later. A naive intuition that “adding nodes can only increase the required depth smoothly” fails because tree structure can become incompatible with binary constraints. Another trap is assuming the root is fixed; the problem explicitly allows choosing the best root for each prefix, which completely changes the interpretation.
Approaches
A brute force interpretation would be: for each prefix, try every possible root, simulate whether we can embed the current tree into a full binary tree of depth $d$, and find the minimal $d$. This is immediately infeasible because even checking one root requires reasoning about subtree branching constraints, and doing it for every prefix leads to at least $O(n^2)$, more realistically $O(n^3)$ if done honestly with structure validation.
The key structural observation is that full binary trees are completely determined by how many “expansion slots” exist at each level. Each node contributes up to two child slots, and embedding a tree means every node in the current structure must fit within this doubling capacity. That reduces the problem from global shape matching into tracking how “wide” the tree can be at each depth under optimal rooting.
The deeper insight is that for any tree, the best root is always the one that minimizes the maximum downward growth requirement, and the binary depth depends only on how quickly the tree can expand in a BFS layering under optimal rooting. This allows the problem to be reframed as maintaining a dynamic structure where each node insertion affects a controlled number of candidate “growth states”, rather than recomputing global structure.
The accepted solutions typically maintain a small set of candidate depths or maintain a DP-like compression of subtree capacities, merging updates as nodes are added. Because each node only connects to a previous node, updates can be propagated along a path or localized to ancestors in amortized constant or logarithmic time.

Steps
- Start with a single node. Its binary depth is trivially 1 because a single vertex can always be the root of a depth-1 full binary tree.
- When a new node $i$ is attached to $p_i$, we interpret this as increasing the demand in the subtree of $p_i$. This affects the “load” of all ancestors that could serve as roots or internal structure in an embedding.
- We maintain for each node a compressed representation of how many nodes its subtree would require in a perfect binary embedding. This is equivalent to maintaining a DP value that represents the minimal height needed if this node were treated as a root of its induced subtree.
- When merging a child into its parent, we combine their capacities. If a node has two heavy subtrees, the required depth increases because both must fit under binary branching constraints.
- After updating the structure for the new node, we compute whether the whole tree can still be embedded. This reduces to checking whether the current “maximum required depth” is consistent with the number of nodes seen so far, since a full binary tree of depth $d$ can only host $2^d - 1$ nodes.
- The binary depth for prefix $i$ is the smallest $d$ such that $2^d - 1 \ge i$, adjusted upward if structural constraints force a larger depth due to imbalance in subtree growth.
Why it works
The invariant is that after processing each prefix, every subtree is summarized by the minimal depth needed to embed it into a full binary tree.
