Each row of the river can be treated independently. Along a chosen row, we want to place supports in some columns so that the first and last columns always contain supports, and the number of cells skipped between two neighboring supports is at most d.

If supports are placed at columns j1 and j2, the gap condition is:

$$|j_1 - j_2| - 1 \le d$$

which is equivalent to:

$$|j_1 - j_2| \le d + 1$$

Installing a support at column j costs a[i][j] + 1.

For every row, we need the minimum possible bridge cost. After that, we must choose k consecutive rows whose bridge costs have minimum total sum.

The structure naturally splits into two subproblems:

  1. Compute the optimal bridge cost for a single row.
  2. Find the minimum sum over all consecutive groups of k rows.

The constraints heavily shape the solution. The total number of cells across all test cases is at most 2 * 10^5, so something close to linear in the input size is expected. A quadratic algorithm over columns would fail because a single row may contain 2 * 10^5 columns. Even O(m * d) becomes dangerous when d is large.

The tricky part is the bridge construction on one row. A careless greedy approach fails because choosing the cheapest nearby support now may force many expensive supports later.

Consider this row:

0 1 100 1 0

with d = 1.

You cannot jump directly from column 1 to column 5 because the distance between supports would skip 3 cells. The optimal solution must use intermediate supports.

Another subtle case appears when d is very large.

Example:

0 5 7 2 0

with d = 10.

Now the first and last supports alone already satisfy the distance condition, so the answer is simply:

1 + 1 = 2

A buggy implementation may still force unnecessary middle supports.

One more easy off-by-one trap comes from the distance definition. The problem defines distance as skipped cells, not absolute column difference.

If d = 1, supports may differ by at most 2 in column index.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is straightforward dynamic programming.

Let dp[j] be the minimum cost to place a support at column j. Then:

$$dp[j] = cost(j) + \min(dp[t])$$

where t ranges over all previous support positions that can connect to j.

Since supports can differ by at most d + 1 in column index:

$$j - (d+1) \le t < j$$

For every column, we scan all valid previous columns and take the minimum.

That gives:

$$O(m \cdot d)$$

time for one row.

In the worst case, d can be m, so this becomes O(m^2). With m = 2 * 10^5, this is completely infeasible.

The key observation is that the transition only asks for the minimum value inside a sliding window.

For column j, we need:

$$\min(dp[j-d-1], \dots, dp[j-1])$$

As j increases, this range also slides to the right. Sliding window minimum problems are exactly what monotonic queues solve efficiently.

Instead of recomputing the minimum every time, we maintain a deque containing candidate columns with increasing dp values. The front always stores the smallest valid dp.

That reduces the per-row complexity from quadratic to linear.

After computing the optimal bridge cost for every row, the second phase is easy. We need the minimum sum of k consecutive row costs, which is another sliding window.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. For each row, create a DP array where dp[j] represents the minimum total cost if the last installed support is at column j.
  2. Initialize the first column.

The first support is mandatory, and its cost is:

$$a[i][1] + 1 = 1$$

so:

$$dp[0] = 1$$

  1. Maintain a monotonic deque storing candidate previous positions.

The deque keeps indices whose dp values are increasing. The front always contains the minimum dp among currently reachable columns. 2. Process columns from left to right.

For column j, remove indices from the front if they are too far away:

$$idx < j - (d + 1)$$

because those supports can no longer connect to j.

  1. Compute the transition.

The best previous support is at the deque front:

$$dp[j] = dp[best] + a[i][j] + 1$$

  1. Insert the current column into the deque.

While the back has a dp value greater than or equal to dp[j], remove it. Such positions are never useful again because the current one is both cheaper and more recent. 2. After finishing the row, store dp[m-1] as the minimum bridge cost for that row. 3. Once all row costs are known, compute the minimum sum of k consecutive rows using a sliding window. 4. Output the smallest window sum.

Why it works

The DP is correct because every valid bridge ending at column j must come from some previous support within distance d + 1. The recurrence checks all such possibilities and chooses the cheapest one.

The deque always contains exactly the valid previous columns for the current position, ordered so the smallest dp stays at the front. Since invalid positions are removed immediately and dominated positions are discarded from the back, the deque minimum is always correct.

Because every column enters and leaves the deque at most once, the total work stays linear.
