Each charge can be used at most once and we are allowed to ignore it entirely.

The goal is to activate the minimum number of charges so that every cell in the strip becomes painted at least once. Overlaps are allowed and do not matter, so this is purely about covering the entire index range with as few directed intervals as possible, where each interval comes from choosing a direction for a chosen index.

The constraints are small per test case, with n up to 100 and total n across tests up to 1000. That immediately rules out anything worse than about O(n³) per test case, but more importantly it allows dynamic programming over intervals or positions with transitions that try all choices of the next action.

A naive idea would be to treat each charge as producing two candidate intervals and then try all subsets of charges. That fails because each choice depends on direction and interaction with already covered regions. Another common incorrect attempt is greedy selection of the longest interval covering the leftmost uncovered cell, but directionality breaks greedy optimality. A charge that looks locally optimal might waste its extension direction and block better coverage later.

The key difficulty is that each index contributes two asymmetric intervals, and we must choose a subset that covers the whole line with minimum cardinality.

Approaches

A brute force approach would try all subsets of charges and for each subset try all left or right orientations. Each configuration produces up to n intervals, and verifying coverage is O(n), giving roughly O(3ⁿ) behavior. This is impossible even for n = 100.

The structure becomes manageable once we notice that what matters is not which charges we pick globally, but how we progressively cover the segment from left to right. Once some prefix is covered, the next decision is essentially about choosing a charge that extends coverage as far right as possible from some starting point, possibly skipping some cells inside already covered range.

This leads naturally to a DP over positions, where we treat each cell as a potential “start of uncovered region” and compute the minimum number of intervals needed to reach or pass every position. From each position i, we can consider all charges j ≥ i, and simulate using j in a direction that covers i, which produces a farthest reachable endpoint. The transition becomes a shortest path on indices.

Because n is small, we can precompute for each i and each j the effect of using j in the appropriate direction to cover i, and then relax dp transitions.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We define dp[x] as the minimum number of charges needed to cover all cells up to position x, with the interpretation that dp[0] = 0 and other states are initialized to infinity.

  1. We treat coverage as a monotone process from left to right. Any valid solution can be seen as a sequence of segments that extend current coverage to the right boundary. This is valid because once a prefix is fully covered, internal overlaps do not matter for correctness.
  2. For each starting position i, we try to choose a charge j as the next active interval contributor. The charge can be used to extend coverage either left or right, but only the option that actually covers i is relevant, since i is the first uncovered point in the DP state.
  3. If we use j to the right, it covers [j, j + a[j] - 1], so it is useful for state i only if j ≤ i ≤ j + a[j] - 1. If we use j to the left, it covers [j - a[j] + 1, j], so it is useful if j - a[j] + 1 ≤ i ≤ j.
  4. Once a valid orientation is chosen, we compute the farthest right endpoint reachable from that action. That endpoint becomes a candidate next state in dp. We update dp at that endpoint with dp[i] + 1.
  5. We repeat this relaxation for all i in increasing order, ensuring that when we process i, dp[i] already reflects the optimal way to reach it.

The algorithm effectively builds a directed graph on positions where edges represent using a charge to cover a segment, and we compute shortest paths from 1 to n.

Why it works

Any valid solution corresponds to a sequence of used charges, each of which must cover the first uncovered position at the time it is used. This induces a unique ordering of intervals by increasing coverage. The DP enforces exactly this ordering by always expanding from the leftmost uncovered position and considering all charges that can cover it. Since every valid solution can be decomposed into such a sequence and every transition is considered, the DP cannot miss a better construction.

The DP array is indexed by how far we have covered from the left. For each endpoint i, we try every possible charge as the last segment that helped reach or pass i. The transitions explicitly compute the starting point of the segment contribution and reduce the problem to a previously solved prefix.

The critical detail is that we only transition from dp[l - 1], not dp[i - 1], because the chosen segment may start earlier than i but still be responsible for covering i.
