Problem Understanding

We are given a multiset of colored cubes. Cube colors are fixed, but we may choose how to distribute them across shelves and in what order they appear on each shelf.

For a shelf, the requirement is about the minimum distance between equal colors. If a shelf has colorfulness at least d, then any two occurrences of the same color on that shelf must be separated by at least d positions. Another way to say it is that inside a shelf, equal colors are forbidden from appearing within the previous d - 1 positions.

Each shelf has a length s_i and a required distance d_i. We must construct an actual sequence of colors for every shelf, using every cube exactly once.

The total number of cubes over all test cases is at most 2 · 10^5. That immediately rules out anything quadratic in n. A solution around O(n log n) is completely comfortable, while O(n^2) would perform roughly 4 · 10^10 operations in the worst case.

The subtle part of the problem is that the shelves are independent in the final answer, but the cube frequencies are global. A greedy placement that looks valid on one shelf can consume colors in a way that makes a later shelf impossible.

Consider a shelf of size 4 with d = 2 and four cubes of the same color. The shelf would need the pattern x ? x ?, but there are not enough other colors to separate all copies. A greedy algorithm that only checks the current position could discover the impossibility too late.

Another easy mistake is treating the condition as "adjacent cubes must differ" when d > 2. For example:

The two 1s are only two positions apart, so the colorfulness is 2, not 3.

A third trap is forgetting that shelves are completely separate. A color used at the end of one shelf and the beginning of another does not create any violation because colorfulness is defined inside each shelf only.

Approaches

A brute force viewpoint is to build shelves one position at a time and try all colors that still have remaining copies. Whenever we place a color, we verify that the shelf's colorfulness constraint remains satisfiable. This is conceptually correct because it explores all possible constructions.

The problem is the branching factor. Even after compressing equal colors, there may be thousands of distinct choices at each step. The search space becomes exponential.

The key observation is that a shelf with requirement d only cares about the previous d - 1 positions. Once a color is used, it becomes unavailable for the next d - 1 positions and then becomes usable again.

This starts looking like a scheduling problem. Every color has a remaining frequency. Among all currently available colors, using the color with the largest remaining count is the safest choice because highly frequent colors are the hardest to place later.

That suggests the classic greedy used in rearrangement problems with cooldown constraints.

For a shelf with distance d:

place a color
temporarily block it
after d steps, unblock it

Among all unblocked colors, always take the one with the largest remaining frequency.

The beautiful part is that we do not need to solve shelves separately. We process shelves in order, while maintaining a global pool of remaining cubes. Inside a shelf, colors are temporarily removed from the pool for exactly d positions. When they become legal again, they are reinserted.

If at some position there is no available color, then no valid construction exists. The official solution uses exactly this greedy with a set ordered by remaining frequency.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Count how many cubes exist for every color.
  2. Store every color with positive frequency in an ordered set keyed by (remaining_count, color).
  3. Process shelves one by one.
  4. For the current shelf, create an array of length s_i.
  5. When filling position j, first check whether the color placed at position j - d_i should become available again. If it still has remaining copies, reinsert it into the set.
  6. If the set is empty, no legal color can be placed at the current position. Output -1.
  7. Otherwise, take the color with the largest remaining frequency.
  8. Place it at the current position, remove one copy from its frequency, and keep it blocked for the next d_i - 1 positions.
  9. After the shelf is completely filled, release all colors that are still waiting in the cooldown window. This prepares the global structure for the next shelf.
  10. After all shelves are processed, output the constructed shelves.

Why it works

At every step, the set contains exactly the colors that are legal to place at the current position. Any color used within the last d_i - 1 positions of the current shelf is temporarily excluded.

Among all legal colors, choosing the one with the largest remaining frequency is the standard greedy strategy for cooldown scheduling. A color with many remaining copies is the most constrained resource. Delaying it only makes future placements harder. If the greedy cannot place any color because the available set is empty, every remaining color is currently blocked, so no valid continuation exists.

The invariant is that the set always contains all and only legal colors, and every placement respects the distance requirement. Consequently, every produced shelf has colorfulness at least d_i. The accepted Codeforces solution follows exactly this construction.

The frequency array tracks how many unused cubes remain for every color.

The heap stores only colors that are currently available. A color disappears from the heap immediately after being placed. It reappears exactly d_i positions later, which is implemented by reinserting the color from position j - d_i.

A subtle detail is that the heap key uses the current remaining frequency. When a color is placed, its count decreases and the color is not reinserted immediately. This avoids stale frequencies.

Another important detail is the cleanup loop after finishing a shelf. Some colors may still be blocked because the shelf ended before their cooldown expired. They must be released before starting the next shelf because shelves are independent.
