The key insight is to stop thinking about positions and instead think about how LIS is formed. LIS depends only on relative ordering of values. Since we can reorder b arbitrarily, we should treat it as a resource pool of values we can use to “break” or “control” increasing subsequences in a.
The central observation is that inserting a value does not have a uniform effect. A value from b can either extend an increasing subsequence or interrupt it depending on how it is placed relative to neighboring a values. To minimize LIS, we want to avoid creating new opportunities for increasing chains while also ensuring that elements of a do not combine with each other into long increasing runs.
This leads to the standard greedy structure: sort b, and then construct the final array by greedily interleaving elements of a with carefully chosen elements of b, always trying to place “as many blocking elements as possible” before allowing any growth in increasing structure.
The correct construction emerges when we simulate how LIS would evolve if we scan the final array and maintain a “current threshold” for increasing subsequences. We always insert the smallest available b value that prevents extending the current LIS state whenever possible.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first sort array b. This allows us to always use the smallest or largest available inserted value depending on what we need locally, which is crucial for controlling subsequences.
We then simulate building the final array while preserving the order of a.
- Sort b in non-decreasing order and initialize a pointer over b.

The subtle part is understanding why we insert b elements “ahead” of a elements. We are essentially filling gaps where increasing subsequences would otherwise propagate through consecutive a elements. By saturating these gaps with carefully ordered b values, we prevent long strictly increasing chains from forming across a.
Why it works
The algorithm maintains a key invariant: at any point in the construction, the partial sequence has the smallest possible LIS among all ways of placing the already-consumed elements of b. Edge Cases
When all elements in a are equal, the LIS of a is already 1, and inserting any values from b cannot increase it beyond 1 if we place them in non-increasing order around a.
