Problem Understanding

Each carriage initially contains some number of passengers. A passenger starting in carriage i may move left or right, but cannot cross more than D_i doors. That means every passenger from carriage i must end up somewhere inside the interval

$$[i-D_i,; i+D_i]$$

after clipping the endpoints to the valid range 1..N.

We are free to redistribute passengers as long as every passenger stays inside the interval allowed by their starting carriage.

The goal is not to minimize total movement. Instead, we want the train to be as balanced as possible. After all moves are finished, let Z be the largest number of passengers in any carriage. We must find the smallest achievable value of Z.

The constraints are what make the problem interesting. There are up to 2 · 10^5 carriages, and passenger counts can be as large as 10^9. Any algorithm that explicitly moves passengers, builds a flow graph with one node per passenger, or tries all possible final distributions is immediately impossible. Even an O(N^2) algorithm would require around 4 · 10^10 operations in the worst case.

The structure of the movement restriction is the key observation. Every passenger group from carriage i can be assigned only inside one contiguous interval. That interval structure is much simpler than an arbitrary graph.

A few edge cases are easy to miss.

The main difficulty is determining whether a proposed value of Z is feasible.

Approaches

A brute-force viewpoint is to guess the final number of passengers in every carriage and check whether all passengers can be routed there. Even if we somehow restricted each carriage to at most Z passengers, there are exponentially many possible distributions. This is hopeless.

A more sophisticated brute-force idea is to model the problem as a flow network. Each starting carriage contributes A_i units of flow. Each destination carriage has capacity Z. We connect source interval i to every reachable destination carriage.

This is correct, but the graph contains up to

$$\sum (2D_i+1)$$

edges, which can be Θ(N^2) in the worst case. With N = 2 · 10^5, that is far too large.

The turning point comes from noticing that every passenger group corresponds to a single interval on a line. Interval assignment problems often admit greedy sweep-line solutions.

Suppose we fix some candidate value Z. Each carriage now has capacity Z, meaning it can accept at most Z passengers in the final arrangement.

For carriage i, we have a demand of A_i passengers that must be placed somewhere inside interval [L_i, R_i].

This becomes:

"Can all interval-demands be assigned into positions 1..N, where every position has capacity Z?"

The feasibility question is monotonic. If capacity Z works, then any larger capacity also works. That immediately suggests binary search on the answer.

The remaining task is an efficient feasibility test.

Sweep from left to right through destination carriages. When we reach position x, every interval whose left endpoint is x becomes active. The capacity of this position is Z.

To use that capacity optimally, we should always serve the active interval with the smallest right endpoint first. An interval that expires sooner is more urgent. This is the same exchange argument that appears in earliest-deadline-first scheduling.

A min-heap ordered by right endpoint gives exactly what we need.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Feasibility Check for a Fixed Z

For each carriage i, define:

$$L_i = \max(1, i-D_i)$$

$$R_i = \min(N, i+D_i)$$

Carriage i contributes a demand of A_i passengers that must be assigned somewhere inside [L_i, R_i].

We sweep destination positions from left to right.

  1. Create a list of intervals starting at each position.
  2. Maintain a min-heap of active intervals ordered by their right endpoint.
  3. When reaching position x, insert all intervals with L_i = x into the heap.
  4. Before using capacity, check whether some active interval already has R_i < x. If such an interval still exists, its deadline has passed and the assignment is impossible.
  5. Position x has available capacity Z.
  6. Repeatedly take the active interval with the smallest right endpoint.
  7. Assign as much capacity as possible to that interval.
  8. If the interval becomes fully satisfied, remove it permanently.
  9. If the interval still needs passengers after consuming all remaining capacity of position x, put it back into the heap and move on.
  10. After position x is processed, if any active interval has R_i = x, it must already be fully satisfied. Otherwise feasibility fails.
  11. After processing all positions, feasibility succeeds only if no unfinished interval remains.
  1. Set low = 0.
  2. Set high = sum(A).
  3. Binary search the smallest Z for which the feasibility test succeeds.
  4. Output that value.

Why it works

At any destination position, suppose we allocate capacity to an interval with a later right endpoint while another active interval expires sooner.

If the earlier interval later becomes impossible to satisfy, we can swap part of the allocation and give that capacity to the earlier interval instead. The later interval still has at least as much remaining room in future positions because its deadline is no earlier.

Repeatedly applying this exchange argument shows that serving active intervals in increasing order of right endpoint is always at least as good as any other choice.

The sweep guarantees that every interval receives capacity only inside its allowed range. Whenever an interval reaches its right endpoint, the algorithm checks that its full demand has already been assigned. Thus every accepted assignment satisfies all constraints.

Because feasibility is monotonic in Z, binary search finds the minimum feasible value.

The preprocessing converts each starting carriage into an interval [L_i, R_i] together with a demand A_i.

The starts array lets us insert intervals into the heap exactly when they become active. This avoids repeatedly scanning all intervals during the sweep.

The heap stores pairs (right_endpoint, remaining_demand). The smallest right endpoint is always processed first.

A subtle point is the break after reinserting a partially satisfied interval. Once the current position runs out of capacity, no further interval can receive anything from this position. Reinserting and continuing would only waste time.

Another subtle point is the deadline checks. Before using position pos, any interval with r < pos has already expired and must cause failure. After using position pos, any remaining interval with r == pos also causes failure because this was its last chance to receive capacity.

Passenger counts can reach 10^9, so all arithmetic must be done with integers capable of holding large values. Python handles this naturally.

These cases illustrate the two extremes of the problem. Some instances are governed entirely by local deadlines, while others behave like pure load balancing. The sweep-line feasibility test handles both with the same invariant: every interval must receive all of its demand before its right endpoint is passed.
