Each path must follow parent-to-child relationships downward, meaning if a node appears in a path, the next node in that path must be one of its children in the tree. Every node must belong to exactly one path, and we want to use as few paths as possible.
Another way to see the task is that we are breaking the tree into downward chains, where each chain is a simple path starting somewhere and repeatedly going to children until it cannot continue.
The constraints allow up to 200,000 nodes total across all test cases. That immediately rules out any approach that tries to recompute paths independently per node or simulates path building with repeated tree traversals. A linear or near-linear solution per test case is required.
A subtle case appears when the tree is already a single chain. For example, if every node except the root has exactly one child, then the whole tree can be one path, and any algorithm that greedily starts a new path at every node would incorrectly produce too many paths.
On the other extreme, if every node except the root is directly attached to the root, then every leaf must become its own path since no two leaves connect downward. A naive idea that tries to “merge” paths without respecting parent-child direction will fail here, because leaves cannot be extended upward.
The key difficulty is ensuring that once a node is used in a path, it cannot be reused, while still minimizing the number of starting points.
Approaches
A brute-force strategy would repeatedly pick an unused node and try to extend a path downward as far as possible, marking nodes as used. This works conceptually, because any maximal downward chain is a valid path. However, if implemented carelessly, each extension may require scanning children or checking unused status repeatedly, leading to quadratic behavior in a star-shaped tree where each extension is short and we restart often.
The key observation is that the number of paths we need is exactly the number of nodes that do not have a child chosen as their predecessor in a path. In other words, every time a node has no parent-child “continuation” assigned from above, it becomes a starting point of a new path. If we process nodes from leaves upward, we can always attach each node to at most one path coming from its children, and only if none of its children already start a chain through it do we create a new path starting at that node.
This suggests a reverse processing order: handle leaves first, then move upward, always extending chains greedily whenever possible. Each node either inherits a chain from one of its children or becomes the head of a new chain.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We reframe the tree in terms of children lists. Instead of focusing on parents, we group all nodes under their parent.
We also track which nodes are still available to be placed into a path.
- Build a list of children for every node. We also identify the root as the unique node with parent equal to itself.
- Maintain a set or list of all nodes that currently have no assigned parent in our constructed paths. Initially, every node is unassigned.
- We perform a process starting from nodes that are leaves in the tree structure. A leaf is a node with no children in the original tree.
- For each leaf, we start a new path consisting of that leaf.
- We attempt to extend this path upward only through parent pointers, but in reverse thinking: instead of going down from root, we propagate path membership upward by saying that a node can join a path if none of its other children are competing to occupy it in a different path.
- Practically, we process nodes in reverse topological order. For each node, we check if any child has already started a path that can pass through this node. If exactly one child can extend upward through it, we attach this node to that child's chain.
- If no child can extend through it, we start a new path at this node.
- We store for each node which child-path it belongs to, allowing us to reconstruct the final sequences.
The central idea is that every path corresponds to selecting a unique downward chain from some starting node, and we ensure minimality by merging whenever possible upward through unique child continuation.
Why it works
Each node is either the continuation of exactly one child chain or the start of a new chain. If multiple children tried to pass through a node, merging would create branching, which violates the path structure. If exactly one child can extend through, we lose nothing by continuing that chain upward. This ensures that every maximal chain is preserved, and no unnecessary path starts are created.
Because every node is processed once and assigned at most one successor in its path, we guarantee both coverage and minimal number of paths.

The implementation first builds the adjacency list of children from the parent array. A traversal order is computed so that we can process nodes from leaves upward. Then each node is assigned at most one “next node” pointer, which represents how chains merge upward.
Nodes that cannot be extended by any child become starting points of paths. From each such start, we follow the nxt pointers to reconstruct the full downward chain.
A subtle point is that each node must be visited exactly once during reconstruction. This is guaranteed because each node has at most one incoming chain pointer, so cycles cannot form.

Consider the sample tree where p = [3, 1, 3, 3, 1].
We build children:
node 3 has {1, 4}, node 1 has {2, 5}.
Leaves are 2, 4, 5.
We assign chains bottom-up. Node 1 can extend to 2 and 5 but since there are multiple candidates, it cannot unify them into a single chain, so it becomes a split point. Node 3 similarly has multiple competing child chains.
