A direct consequence of the constraints is that any solution must process each element a constant number of times, or at worst logarithmic time per operation. Anything that depends on recomputing minima or maxima per segment from scratch is too slow.

A subtle issue arises from the fact that the condition depends on both minimum and maximum simultaneously. Many problems with range minima or maxima alone can be solved with monotonic stacks or sliding windows, but combining both extremes with a derived property makes naive two-pointer approaches unreliable unless carefully structured.

A naive approach would enumerate all segments and compute min, max, and popcount for each. This fails because computing min and max per segment is O(n), leading to O(n^3) overall in a straightforward implementation, or O(n^2) with sparse precomputation, both far beyond limits.

Approaches

A brute-force method would consider every pair of endpoints l and r, maintain the minimum and maximum of a growing segment, and check the condition. Even if we maintain min and max incrementally while extending r, each l still requires O(n) expansions, leading to O(n^2) operations.

The bottleneck is not computing min and max themselves, but the fact that we are counting segments with a condition that depends only on the values of min and max, not on internal structure. This suggests that we should reorganize the problem so that each value contributes to many segments in a controlled way.

The key observation is that for a fixed segment, the only thing that matters are the identities of its minimum and maximum elements. Once we fix which element is the minimum and which is the maximum, the validity condition depends only on those two values, not on the rest of the segment. This suggests reversing the perspective: instead of enumerating segments, we enumerate pairs of positions that can serve as min and max boundaries.

We can maintain all segments where a given element acts as the minimum or maximum using a standard technique: for each index, determine the range in which it is the minimum using a monotonic stack, and similarly for maximum. This gives us, for every position, a range of subarrays where it is the controlling minimum or maximum.

Now the problem becomes a counting problem over intersections of these ranges. For each element, we compute how many subarrays use it as the minimum or maximum, and then combine contributions carefully. The condition is symmetric: we only care about matching popcounts of min and max, so we group values by their popcount.

Inside each group, we reduce the problem to counting how often a minimum with a given popcount overlaps with a maximum with the same popcount. This can be handled by sweeping endpoints and maintaining active intervals.

We end up with a solution based on two monotonic-stack passes plus a sweep-line or event-based counting per popcount class.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We first convert each value into a weight: the number of set bits in its binary representation. This compresses the problem so that instead of comparing raw values, we compare a small integer in the range [0, 60].

  1. For each index i, compute b[i] = popcount(a[i]). This is the only property that matters for the final condition.
  2. For every position, compute the span where it is the minimum element in a subarray. This is done using a monotonic increasing stack, producing for each i a range [Lmin[i], Rmin[i]] such that any subarray whose minimum is a[i] must have its boundaries constrained by this range.

The reason this works is that in any valid segment where i is the minimum, the segment cannot extend past the nearest smaller element on either side.

  1. Similarly compute Lmax[i], Rmax[i] using a monotonic decreasing stack, defining all segments where a[i] is the maximum.

At this point, every subarray has at least one candidate index that serves as its minimum and at least one candidate that serves as its maximum.

  1. For each index i, we interpret its contribution as defining a set of subarrays where it is responsible for being the minimum, and similarly for maximum. We do not double count by assigning each subarray a canonical representation using the leftmost occurrence of its minimum and maximum.

This avoids ambiguity where multiple indices could serve as the same extreme.

  1. For each popcount value c, we collect all intervals where indices with b[i] = c act as minimums and maximums. We treat these as events over segment ranges.
  2. We sweep across positions, maintaining how many active minimum-intervals and maximum-intervals of each class overlap at each endpoint. The contribution at a point is the number of pairs of active min-intervals and max-intervals in the same popcount class.
  3. We accumulate these contributions to obtain the final answer.

Why it works

Every valid subarray is uniquely identified by its minimum and maximum elements. Each such pair is counted exactly once when we assign responsibility based on canonical extreme positions derived from monotonic stack boundaries. Grouping by popcount ensures we only count pairs that satisfy the binary condition. The stack boundaries guarantee that every valid subarray is represented exactly once in the interval structure, preventing both omission and double counting.
