A subtle edge case comes from strings that already do not contain abc as a subsequence. For example, "aaacccbbb" is safe regardless of local patterns because ordering prevents a < b < c. Another tricky case is when multiple disjoint subsequences overlap heavily, where greedy local fixes underestimate the number of changes needed.
Approaches
A brute-force method would recompute the answer after every update by scanning the string and checking whether abc exists as a subsequence. This can be done in O(n) using a simple pointer scan: first match all a, then b, then c. The straightforward dynamic programming over prefixes would still cost O(n) per query, leading to O(nq) total complexity, which is too slow for 200,000 total operations.
The key insight is that we only care about whether the string contains a subsequence equal to a pattern of length three. This suggests a finite automaton viewpoint: we track how many ways we can progress through matching a → b → c in order. Instead of thinking about positions, we think about how a character contributes to transitions between states.
For each prefix of the string, we can maintain a 3-state DP describing how many ways we are currently in state 0 (matched nothing), state 1 (matched at least one a), state 2 (matched ab), and state 3 (completed abc). The problem reduces to ensuring we never reach state 3. However, since we are allowed to modify characters, each position can be interpreted as choosing one of three letters, and we want to minimize the number of positions that force a transition into the forbidden state.
This becomes a classic segment tree over 3×3 transition matrices. Each character corresponds to a matrix describing how it transforms state counts. Combining segments corresponds to matrix multiplication in the semiring of transitions. The answer for the whole string is derived from whether state 3 is reachable; more precisely, we compute the minimal edits needed to block all paths reaching abc.

Why it works
