The goal is to move the points so that every interval is covered by at least one point at some time during its trajectory, while minimizing the total number of unit moves across all points.
A useful way to rephrase this is that each point can “sweep” an interval of positions along the line, and we want to assign intervals to points so that each interval is touched by at least one assigned point, minimizing the sum of travel distances.
The constraints are large enough that any solution must be close to linear or logarithmic per test case. Since the total sum of n and m over all test cases is at most 2·10^5, an O((n + m) log n) or O((n + m) α(n)) solution is feasible, while anything quadratic in m or n per test case is impossible.
A subtle failure mode appears when multiple intervals overlap heavily. A greedy that assigns each interval independently to the nearest point can fail because one point can cover many intervals cheaply if we exploit ordering. Another edge case occurs when all points lie to one side of all intervals. In that case, every interval must be reached from the closest point, and a naive greedy that repeatedly chooses different points without considering reuse can overcount movement.
Approaches
A brute-force interpretation would try assigning each interval to a point and deciding an order in which each point visits its assigned intervals. For each assignment, one could compute the minimum travel path by sorting intervals and simulating coverage. This immediately becomes combinatorial: with m intervals and n points, the number of assignments grows exponentially. Even restricting each interval to a nearest point still leaves dependency between intervals because a single point can cover many intervals in one continuous walk, so local choices affect global cost.
The key structural insight is that movement on a line is one-dimensional, so optimal motion for a single point that serves multiple intervals is monotone: once it starts moving to cover a range of intervals, it never benefits from reversing direction in a way that creates gaps. This turns the problem into assigning contiguous groups of intervals to points in sorted order.
We sort both points and intervals. Then we process intervals from left to right and greedily decide how far a chosen point must travel to cover a consecutive block of intervals. The cost for a point depends only on the span it must reach, not on individual interval structure inside that span.
We maintain a pointer over points and assign each point a maximal consecutive segment of intervals such that using this point is optimal compared to switching to the next point. The cost contributed by a point becomes the distance it must travel from its starting position to cover the farthest required boundary of its assigned interval block.
This reduces the problem from arbitrary matching to a structured partitioning of intervals along the line.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Sort the points by their coordinates. This ensures we always consider using the closest available point for left-to-right interval processing.
- Sort all intervals by their left endpoint. This allows us to process coverage in a monotone sweep along the line.
- Initialize a pointer over points and a running pointer over intervals. We will assign intervals greedily from left to right.
- For the current point, consider extending coverage over consecutive intervals. We track the minimum cost needed if this point is responsible for a block of intervals.
- For each interval [l, r], if the current point can reach l by moving right, then it can cover that interval. If it starts left of l, it must move right; if it starts right of r, it must move left. In either case, the cost contribution depends on reaching at least one point in [l, r], and further extension depends on how far we must continue.
- We expand the current interval block as long as assigning them to the same point does not become worse than switching to the next point. The decision boundary is driven by comparing distances to adjacent points.
- Once we cannot extend further, we finalize the block for the current point, add its cost, and move to the next point.
A cleaner way to interpret the same process is that for each point we determine the furthest interval boundary it must reach, and we compute cost as the minimal travel needed to cover all assigned interval endpoints.
Why it works
The essential invariant is that at any moment, intervals are processed in sorted order and each interval is assigned to the earliest point that can serve it without increasing total cost beyond switching to a later point. Because both points and interval endpoints are sorted, any optimal solution can be transformed into one where assignments do not cross: if a later point covers an earlier interval while an earlier point covers a later interval, swapping them cannot increase cost. This exchange argument guarantees that an optimal solution exists that respects monotone assignment boundaries, which is exactly what the greedy constructs.

The solution sorts both arrays so that we can reason purely about contiguous segments on the line. The pointer i advances through intervals globally, ensuring each interval is processed exactly once. For each point, we greedily absorb as many intervals as remain consistent with a single outward expansion. The variable far tracks the furthest coordinate that must be reached to satisfy the currently considered block. The cost contribution is then simply the distance from the point to that extreme.
A subtle point is that we never try to simulate back-and-forth movement. The absolute distance captures optimal motion because the best strategy for a point that must reach a set of positions is always to move toward the extreme endpoint of that set.

Edge Cases
A key edge case is when intervals are all far to one side of all points. For example, points at [0] and intervals [100,101], [102,103]. The algorithm assigns both intervals to the single point and moves it only to the farthest endpoint, giving cost 103. Any attempt to “split” coverage is impossible and would only increase cost, since there is no second point.
Another case is tightly clustered overlapping intervals such as [1,2], [2,3], [3,4] with a single point at 0. The algorithm extends a single block, updates far to 4, and pays cost 4, which matches the fact that a single continuous sweep covers all intervals optimally.
A third case is alternating dense points and sparse intervals. If points are at 0 and 100 and intervals are [1,2], [98,99], the greedy naturally splits into two blocks because extending the first point past 2 to reach 98 would be more expensive than switching, preserving optimal assignment.
