A brute-force approach would enumerate every pair of nodes $u, v$, extract the path between them, and compute its score directly. Extracting a path costs $O(n)$ in the worst case, and there are $O(n^2)$ pairs, leading to $O(n^3)$ time. Even with LCA preprocessing reducing path extraction overhead, we still face $O(n^2)$ candidate paths, which is far too large for $150000$.

The key structural observation is that the path score is linear in the sequence but with position-based weights. This means that if we fix an orientation of a path, the score depends only on cumulative sums and lengths, not on any branching structure. This makes it possible to merge partial information about paths if we maintain enough statistics about prefix behavior.

At each centroid, every path that passes through it can be split into two halves: one from the centroid to a node in one subtree, and one from the centroid to a node in another subtree. For every previously processed subtree, we combine its stored data with the current subtree’s data using the concatenation formula. This generates all paths that go through the centroid with one endpoint in each subtree.

The cross term arises because nodes in the second subtree shift prefix weights of the first subtree. 4. Maintain a global maximum over all computed path values, including single-subtree paths and cross-subtree combinations. 5. Recursively apply the same process to all decomposed subtrees after removing the centroid.

Why it works

Every simple path in a tree either passes through a unique centroid at some level of decomposition or lies entirely inside a subtree handled recursively. At the centroid where a path is first “split”, the algorithm evaluates it by combining exactly two partial paths from different subtrees. The algebraic identity ensures that combining stored statistics reproduces exactly the score of the full concatenated sequence without loss of positional weighting.

Because centroid decomposition guarantees every edge is considered only $O(\log n)$ times, all valid path combinations are accounted for once, and no invalid combination can be formed that does not correspond to a real simple path.
