A second naive idea is to maintain a dynamic DSU that supports deletions, since old values are replaced. However, standard DSU does not support edge deletions, and rollback complexity becomes problematic when values change arbitrarily.

This means that each time we assign a new value to a cell, we only need to consider how it connects to already existing cells with the same value.

Instead of recomputing components, we process values in increasing order and activate cells when their value becomes relevant. When a cell becomes active at a certain value, it connects only to its four neighbors if those neighbors already have the same value or are already active at that value. Since values are non-decreasing over queries, we can maintain DSU states incrementally.

A useful perspective is to reverse thinking: instead of “removing old value and adding new value”, we only ever “add structure” when values increase. Each time a value appears for a cell, we treat it as activation of that cell at that threshold, and union it with compatible neighbors. This avoids deletions entirely.

The critical trick is to process cells grouped by value and maintain the current state of active equal-valued cells. Algorithm Walkthrough

We treat each cell as a node in a DSU. The grid is built progressively by activating cells when they receive their final value for a given stage.

  1. Read all queries, storing for each cell only its final assigned value at each step. Since values are non-decreasing, each cell’s value timeline is monotonic and can be compressed into segments of activation.
  2. Sort or group updates by value level. For each value, collect all cells that become exactly that value at some point. We process values in increasing order, ensuring we never revisit lower states.
  3. Maintain a boolean grid that tracks whether a cell is active at the current or earlier value level. When we process a new value, we activate all cells whose assigned value equals this level.
  4. For each newly activated cell, check its four neighbors. If a neighbor is already active and has the same value, we union the two cells in DSU. Each successful union reduces the component count by one.
  5. Maintain a global component counter initialized as zero. When a new cell is activated, it starts as a new component, then merges with any matching neighbors, adjusting the counter accordingly.
  6. After processing all activations for a given query value, record the current component count as the answer for that query.

The reason we can do this is that every edge between equal-value adjacent cells is considered exactly once, when the later endpoint becomes active. We never need to revisit or delete edges.

Why it works

At any moment corresponding to a fixed value threshold, the active cells form a graph where edges exist only between adjacent equal-valued cells. The DSU invariant is that each connected component in this graph corresponds exactly to one DSU set.
