Algorithm Walkthrough
We focus on one group. Let subgroup 1 initially contain all students.
We maintain current counts of how many students in subgroup 1 require maths, programming, and PE. We also track how many students of each type are currently assigned to subgroup 1.
- Initialize subgroup 1 by placing all students there. Compute current demand for each subject by summing contributions of all seven types.
- For each subject independently, check whether its demand exceeds subgroup 1 capacity for that subject. If it does not exceed, nothing needs to be done for that subject.
- When a subject exceeds capacity, we must move some students from subgroup 1 to subgroup 2. We choose students that contribute to that subject, because only they reduce the overload.
- We greedily move students type by type, starting from types that affect the most overloaded combination. The reason is that moving a student may also reduce overload in multiple subjects, so we prefer students with multiple subject contributions when possible.
- After each move, update all three subject counters. This may resolve other violations or create new ones, so we recheck all subjects after every adjustment.
- Continue until either all constraints are satisfied or we run out of candidates to move. If we cannot reduce an overload despite having students contributing to that subject, the configuration is impossible.
- Once subgroup 1 is valid, all remaining students form subgroup 2 automatically, and we output the assignment.
Why it works
The process always reduces a strictly positive overload in at least one subject whenever we move a student contributing to that subject. Since total demand is bounded by the number of students, and each move reduces the number of students in subgroup 1, the process cannot loop indefinitely. Every failure to find a movable student implies that all remaining students in subgroup 1 do not contribute to the violating subject, which contradicts the existence of an overload. Thus, termination corresponds exactly to feasibility.
