This check is constant time per student, so evaluating one candidate takes O(n). However, the grid is enormous, with up to 10^9 by 10^9 possible positions. Even restricting candidates to student locations, which is a natural simplification, still leaves up to 200,000 candidates, producing O(n^2) behavior in the worst case, which is too slow.
The structural insight is that the condition above does not depend on arbitrary geometry but only on coordinate comparisons relative to the school. Expanding the equality shows that a student contributes if the kiosk lies between the school and the student in both x and y directions in a monotone sense. More precisely, the kiosk must lie inside the axis-aligned rectangle formed by the school and the student, and also align with a consistent direction of travel.
This reduces the problem to a directional counting issue. Each student induces a rectangle anchored at the school, and we want a point covered by as many such rectangles as possible. Instead of scanning the plane, we observe that an optimal point must lie adjacent to the school in one of the four cardinal directions, because shifting a candidate inside a quadrant never reduces coverage and can always be pushed toward the boundary next to the school without losing any satisfied students.
So we only need to test four candidate positions: one step right, left, up, or down from the school, and pick the direction that maximizes the number of students whose x or y coordinate lies on the correct side relative to the school.
This turns the problem into a simple counting pass over all students.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We reduce the decision to four canonical candidate points around the school: moving one unit in each cardinal direction. For each direction, we count how many students can have a shortest path passing through that adjacent cell.
- Consider four directions from the school: right (increase x), left (decrease x), up (increase y), down (decrease y). Each direction corresponds to choosing a candidate cell adjacent to the school. This restriction works because any optimal solution can be shifted toward the school until it hits one of these boundary-adjacent positions without losing validity for any student it already serves.
- For each student, determine in which directions a shortest path from the school to the student can pass through the first step. This is decided purely by coordinate comparison. If the student is to the right of the school (x_i > s_x), then moving right from the school can be the first step of a shortest path toward that student. Similarly, if x_i < s_x, left is valid. The same logic applies independently for y.
- Maintain four counters corresponding to how many students are reachable through each direction from the school. For each student, increment exactly one or two counters depending on whether they lie in different relative quadrants.
- Select the direction with the maximum counter. If multiple directions tie, any is acceptable.
- Output the chosen count and the corresponding adjacent coordinate.
The key idea is that Manhattan shortest paths are monotone in x and y independently, so the first move out of the school determines which set of students can possibly include that cell in their shortest path.
Why it works
For any student, a shortest path from the school to the student must first move either toward or away along each axis without reversing direction later. Therefore, if the kiosk is placed immediately adjacent to the school in a direction that aligns with the student’s relative position, we can always construct a shortest path that goes through that first step. Any point farther away in the same direction does not improve coverage because it excludes some students who would have been able to reach a nearer point. A subtle implementation detail is that students contribute to both horizontal and vertical counters independently. This is intentional because a shortest path can be structured to pass through either axis-first or y-axis-first movement, so both dimensions provide valid path choices.
Boundary handling matters when the school is at coordinate 0 or 10^9. The problem guarantees the chosen point must remain within bounds, and since at least one direction will always be valid (unless at boundary, in which case the opposite direction is valid), the adjacency logic remains safe.
