In that case, every subarray has max minus min equal to zero, while any subarray of length at least 1 requires a difference of at least its length. So the answer is always impossible. Approaches

A direct approach is to try every subarray and compute its minimum and maximum. For each pair of endpoints, we scan the segment and evaluate whether the condition holds. This works correctly because it checks exactly the definition of the problem. However, for an array of size n, there are O(n^2) subarrays, and each requires O(n) time to evaluate, leading to O(n^3) total complexity. Even with optimizations to maintain min and max incrementally, we are still at O(n^2), which is too slow for n up to 200,000.

The key observation is that we do not actually need to consider all subarrays. We only need to find one where the gap between a maximum and minimum is sufficiently large compared to its length. Instead of thinking in terms of arbitrary intervals, we can construct a subarray greedily around two positions where the array exhibits a large jump.

Consider any pair of indices i and j such that the absolute difference |a[i] - a[j]| is large. If we take the subarray spanning from i to j, its maximum is at least max(a[i], a[j]) and its minimum is at most min(a[i], a[j]). The length is j - i + 1. If the value difference is large enough compared to the index distance, we immediately obtain a valid answer.

This shifts the problem from searching over subarrays to checking whether any sufficiently “steep” pair exists. Since we only need one valid subarray, we can look for a constructive condition: if we sort or conceptually track extremes, we can always derive a valid segment when the array contains a local configuration that forces a large value gap over a short distance.

The standard solution simplifies this further: it is enough to check adjacent elements after sorting indices by value or to reason that if no such subarray exists, the array must be “too flat” in a precise sense that implies all elements are equal. That leads to a direct construction: if we ever find two positions where the value difference is at least the index distance, we output that segment.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. For each test case, scan the array and consider candidate subarrays defined by pairs of positions where a large value difference might compensate for their distance. The simplest candidates come from comparing elements as we traverse the array.
  2. Maintain the smallest and largest values seen so far along with their positions as we iterate. The goal is to detect whether the current position can form a valid segment with a previously seen extreme.
  3. At index i, compare a[i] with the current minimum and maximum seen so far. If a[i] is much larger than the minimum or much smaller than the maximum, we test whether the segment between their positions satisfies the condition max - min ≥ length.

Why it works

Any valid subarray must have its maximum and minimum at some two endpoints of the segment. When scanning left to right, those endpoints correspond to some earlier position and the current index. If a valid segment exists, one of its endpoints will eventually be the right boundary when we reach it in the sweep. At that moment, the stored extreme on the opposite side guarantees that we detect the condition. This ensures we do not miss any candidate segment, because every valid subarray is witnessed by its final element during the traversal.
