Approaches

A brute-force idea is to treat each position as having two possible states: pipeline at height 1 or height 2, and then try all valid transitions. For every segment, we decide whether to stay at height 1, switch up, or switch down. This naturally leads to a dynamic programming where each position depends on the previous height state.

This works conceptually because the cost is local: pipe cost depends on length, pillar cost depends on height, and transitions have fixed cost. However, the brute-force DP still has only O(n) states, so the real issue is not state explosion but incorrectly modeling the cost of transitions between segments of ones and zeros. If we explicitly simulate every zig-zag structure per position, we end up repeatedly accounting for transition costs.

The key observation is that height 2 regions are always contiguous blocks. We never gain anything from splitting a high segment unless forced by zeros at boundaries or cost comparison. So instead of deciding per cell, we decide per block of consecutive 1s whether we keep it at height 2, and we also account for transitions between blocks.

This reduces the problem to deciding, for each run of ones, whether to extend the previous high segment or to start a new one.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process the string from left to right and maintain the cost of the best construction up to the current position.

  1. We start from height 1, and initialize total cost as the cost of laying pipe and pillars in height 1 across the whole segment. This is the baseline configuration.
  2. We scan the string and identify segments of consecutive 1s. Each such segment is a candidate region where we might benefit from switching to height 2.

  4. If we switch to height 2, we pay additional pillar cost per unit, and also pay transition cost for entering and exiting height 2. These transitions correspond to zig-zag structures.
  5. The crucial step is that if two segments of ones are close enough, it may be cheaper to merge them into a single height-2 region rather than paying two separate transitions.
  6. Therefore, when we see a run of zeros between two runs of ones, we decide whether to “bridge” that zero segment by staying at height 2 through it. This decision depends on comparing the cost of extra pillar usage versus the cost of two transitions.
  7. We accumulate the best cost incrementally, merging segments greedily whenever it reduces total cost.

Why it works

The structure of the problem forces any height-2 configuration to consist of contiguous intervals separated by transitions. Every transition has fixed cost, while staying high has linear per-unit cost difference.
