A second naive idea is to simulate all valid sequences using DFS or BFS over states. This fails because the state space is permutations constrained by adjacency, still exponential in size.

A more subtle mistake is to think only about subtree sizes rooted arbitrarily. The difficulty is that the “root” of influence changes depending on which vertex is painted first.

Approaches

The crucial observation is to invert the viewpoint: instead of thinking forward about splitting white components, we think about how much benefit each vertex contributes over time.

Fix a vertex v. Every time v remains white, it belongs to some white connected component. Its contribution at each step is exactly the size of that component. So v contributes once per step until it is painted.

This suggests thinking in terms of “how long v stays white” under an optimal strategy. If v is painted early, it contributes only in early steps when components are large. If it is painted late, it keeps accumulating contributions from increasingly fragmented but still significant components.

A more structural insight comes from choosing a root. Suppose we root the tree at an arbitrary node. Consider what happens if we decide the first painted node is the root. Then the process expands outward, and the order in which subtrees are “activated” determines how long each subtree keeps contributing large values.

The optimal strategy turns out to be equivalent to choosing a root that maximizes a specific rerooting DP value: for each node, we compute the sum of distances weighted by subtree sizes in a transformed sense. This problem reduces to a classic “sum of contributions over all vertices as root” re-rooting DP, where each edge contributes based on how many vertices are separated by it during the process.

Concretely, we define dp[v] as the total answer if v is considered the starting root. We compute dp for one root using a DFS, then reroot efficiently across edges. When moving root from u to v, the contribution changes based on how many nodes are on each side of the edge.

The key insight is that every edge contributes exactly its size-of-cut effect across the process, and the final answer is maximized dp over all roots.

This leads to a linear rerooting solution.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We transform the problem into computing a value dp[root] for every possible root, then taking the maximum.
