Algorithm Walkthrough
We treat the grid as a graph and build a deterministic path that visits all cells in row-major order. We maintain the invariant that once we finish processing a cell, it is in its final correct position and will never be moved again.
We repeatedly bring the correct value for the next target position into place using local rotations.
1. Fix an order of target positions
We process positions from (1,1) to (n,m) in row-major order. At step i, we want the correct value i to be placed at its target cell.
This ordering ensures that when we fix a position, all previous positions are already correct and will not be disturbed by later operations if we are careful to only operate in regions that do not overlap the fixed prefix.
2. Locate the current position of the target value
For each value v, we maintain its current coordinates. We locate where v currently is in O(1) using a position map.
This is necessary because values move after each cycle operation, so scanning the grid repeatedly would be too slow.
3. Move the value toward its target using local swaps
To move a value from its current position to its target position, we shift it step by step in Manhattan fashion, first aligning row, then column.
Each unit movement is implemented using a 2 by 2 cycle. If we want to swap a value horizontally with its neighbor, we use the cycle formed by the 2 by 2 square covering the two cells and their neighbors.
The same applies vertically. Each such cycle rotates four cells and effectively performs a controlled swap between adjacent positions.
This construction ensures we never need cycles larger than 4 in the main part of the algorithm, keeping total cost bounded.
4. Ensure we do not break fixed cells
We always move values through the unprocessed region of the grid. Since we process in row-major order, when we are fixing position (i,j), all earlier positions are never included in any 2x2 block we use.
This is possible because we always have at least one direction to route around fixed cells due to the grid having both dimensions at least 3.
