Algorithm Walkthrough

We process shops sorted by increasing price, and maintain a structure of previously possible buy operations.

  1. Sort all shops by their price ai in non-decreasing order. This ensures that when we reach a shop, every potential buy stored earlier has a price less than or equal to the current one.
  2. Maintain a min-heap that stores candidate buy prices, together with how many times each price is still available. Each entry represents a buy we performed earlier but has not yet been matched with a sell.
  3. Iterate through shops in sorted order. When we arrive at shop i with price ai and capacity bi, we interpret this shop as a potential seller.
  4. For each of the bi possible sell operations, we try to match it with the cheapest available buy from the heap. We extract the smallest buy price available.
  5. If the cheapest buy price is strictly less than ai, we perform the trade and add ai - buy_price to the answer. If the cheapest buy price is greater than or equal to ai, we stop using this shop for selling because no further profitable pairing exists.
  6. If a buy entry is exhausted, we remove it from the heap. If it still has remaining capacity after partial use, we push it back with updated count.
  7. After finishing selling at shop i, we add this shop as a buy source by inserting bi copies of ai into the heap. This ensures future higher-priced shops can use it as a cheap purchase.

The ordering is what enforces correctness: we only ever sell to future higher prices, never backwards.

Why it works

At any moment, the heap contains all buy opportunities from shops with strictly smaller or equal prices than the current one.
