Solving this system from scratch per query means solving a linear system on a tree q times, which is far beyond feasible limits.
A subtle edge case appears when the start is adjacent to the target. Even in this simplest case, the expectation is not always 1, because the walk can immediately move away and wander through large subtrees before returning. Any greedy or shortest-path interpretation fails completely, since the process is stochastic rather than deterministic.
Another failure mode comes from assuming symmetry, such as thinking the answer depends only on distance(s, t). That is false: vertices in large subtrees behave very differently from vertices in small branches, even at the same distance.
Approaches
The brute-force idea is to solve the linear system for each query separately. For a fixed target t, we could root the tree at t and perform a DP where we solve equations from leaves upward. Each edge contributes constraints linking parent and child expectations. This works in O(n) per query, but with q up to 2×10^5 it leads to O(nq), which is infeasible.
The key structural insight is that random walk hitting times on trees have a closed form that decomposes along the unique path between two nodes. Each edge on that path contributes independently in a way that depends only on the size of one side of the cut induced by removing the edge, relative to the target.
This reduces the stochastic process into a purely combinatorial sum over edges, which can be precomputed using subtree sizes and LCA queries.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the tree at an arbitrary node, typically 1, and compute subtree sizes.
For any edge between a parent p and a child c in this rooted tree, removing the edge splits the tree into two components: the subtree of c with size sz[c], and the rest of size n − sz[c].
For a fixed query (s, t), the expected hitting time can be computed by summing contributions over each edge on the unique path from s to t. The contribution of an edge depends on whether t lies inside the subtree of the deeper endpoint.
We use LCA to efficiently enumerate path segments.
Steps
- Root the tree at node 1 and compute depth, parent pointers, and subtree sizes using DFS.
- Preprocess binary lifting tables so we can compute LCA(u, v) in logarithmic time.

- For each node u while moving upward from s to LCA, consider the edge (u, parent[u]). Determine which side of this edge contains t. If t is inside subtree[u], the contribution is 2 × (n − sz[u]); otherwise it is 2 × sz[u]. Add this to the answer.
- Repeat the same process moving upward from t to LCA, treating edges symmetrically.
- Sum all contributions modulo 998244353.
Why it works
Each edge traversal in the path from s to t can be interpreted as the expected number of times the random walk “crosses” that cut before reaching the target. In a tree, every cut splits the graph into exactly two components, and the contribution depends only on which side contains the absorbing state t. The subtree size fully characterizes how much probability mass lies on each side, so every edge contributes a fixed linear amount independent of the rest of the path. This makes the total expectation additive over path edges, and LCA guarantees we enumerate exactly those edges once.
