The key observation is that each node has a fixed deterministic “next pointer”, so every node has a well-defined sequence of future positions. We are effectively comparing two synchronized sequences. Algorithm Walkthrough
We first decompose the functional graph into cycles and trees feeding into cycles.
- Compute the indegree of every node and perform a topological peeling process. We repeatedly remove nodes with indegree zero, pushing them into a queue. This identifies all nodes not in cycles. The remaining nodes are exactly those in cycles.
