Once that condition holds, the best solution is simply the entire connected component containing them.

This reduces the problem from “search over all connected subgraphs” to “check whether a set of nodes lies in one component after removing a vertex, and if so, measure that component size”.

The remaining challenge is to maintain, for each k, whether the set of nodes with values below k gets split by removing vk. We solve this by processing values in increasing order while maintaining how these nodes distribute across the components created by removing each possible vertex.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We root the tree at node 1 and compute parent pointers, depths, and subtree sizes. This rooting is only used for fast navigation; the tree itself remains undirected.

  3. We define a mapping from a pair (v, u) to the specific component of T − v that contains u. This can be computed using the rooted tree: if v is an ancestor of u, then u lies in one of v’s child subtrees; otherwise u lies in the “parent side” of v.
  4. While inserting nodes into A, we update, for every ancestor v of that node in the rooted tree, which component of T − v the node belongs to. We maintain for each (v, component) how many active nodes from A fall into it.
