The key structural insight is to stop thinking in terms of full configurations and instead track only marginal probabilities per row per bit. Even though rows are correlated, the evolution of a single row’s “still 1” probability can be updated exactly because each operation has a simple monotone effect: it either does nothing or enforces a constraint that may turn some 1s into 0s depending on the source row.
We reinterpret each bit independently. Fix a column. Some rows start with 0 in this column. Those rows act as permanent “sources of contamination”: once a row becomes 0, it stays 0 forever. An operation i → j (when activated) says: if i is 0 at that moment, then j must become 0.
So zeros propagate forward along successfully activated operations, but only from sources that are already zero at the time of propagation.
