A subtle point is that the structure is not about the final surviving symbol only. The survivor must also be able to “eliminate” all others through valid adjacency interactions, and adjacency changes dynamically as elements are removed.
Two edge behaviors are easy to underestimate.
First, in version 2, identical adjacent symbols never resolve. For example, if the string is "ppp", no pair of p’s can ever be reduced, so only external symbols can remove them. This creates rigid blocks that cannot shrink internally.
Second, in version 1, identical symbols can be broken arbitrarily, which effectively removes ordering constraints caused by equal letters. Treating the two versions identically leads to wrong answers.
Approaches
A brute force interpretation would try to simulate all possible sequences of adjacent eliminations. Each state is a sequence, and each transition removes one element based on a chosen pair. The branching factor is large because at every step there are up to n−1 choices, and the number of steps is also O(n), producing an exponential state space. Even pruning identical states does not help because different sequences of eliminations can produce different reachability conditions for the remaining target robot.
The key observation is that the process is not about global ordering, but about local dominance relationships between symbols. Each robot type beats exactly one other type in a cycle: rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. So every elimination either removes one symbol or preserves the dominant symbol in that interaction.
Instead of thinking in terms of positions changing, we reinterpret the problem as a reachability question over types. A robot i can win if and only if there exists a sequence of eliminations such that every other robot is eventually removed in a way that never forces i itself to be eliminated.
This reduces the problem to checking whether robot i can be made the “root survivor” of a process where we repeatedly merge adjacent segments and resolve them in favor of a chosen direction of dominance. The important structural fact is that any valid elimination sequence corresponds to a binary merge tree over intervals of the string, where leaves are original robots and internal nodes represent fights between adjacent groups.
For robot i to survive, every group that contains it must resolve in a way that keeps i’s symbol alive. This means that any segment containing i can only be reduced by removing symbols that i can defeat either directly or indirectly through intermediate eliminations.

In version 2, identical adjacent symbols are inert. They cannot eliminate each other, so they form fixed blocks. Each block behaves like a single atomic segment that cannot internally reduce, which means external interactions must resolve entire blocks. This makes survival depend on whether i’s symbol can dominate all other blocks in some elimination ordering consistent with adjacency constraints.
The crucial difference is that version 1 allows us to freely “rearrange via deletions”, while version 2 preserves structural rigidity.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process each test case independently.
- We first count how many robots of each type exist: rock, paper, and scissors. These counts determine global dominance possibilities because no strategy can eliminate a type that is never beaten by the chosen survivor type.
- For each position i, we consider its symbol as a candidate survivor. We test whether it is possible for that symbol to eliminate both other symbols completely. - In version 1, we treat equal symbols as fully flexible. This means any symbol type x can always be arranged so that eliminations between other types do not force x to be removed, as long as x is not strictly dominated by both other types in a way that prevents all eliminations from being directed outward. Practically, this reduces to checking whether x is not globally blocked by a cycle that cannot be broken against it, which in a three-type system simplifies to checking if x is not the “losing type” in a fully present cycle configuration.
- In version 2, we additionally respect that identical symbols cannot eliminate each other. We compress the string into maximal blocks of identical characters. Each block behaves as a single atomic participant with multiplicity. We then check whether the candidate block can survive a sequence of adjacent eliminations that always respects block boundaries. If a type appears in multiple separated blocks, those blocks must survive independently until merged via external eliminations.
- For each index i, we simulate the feasibility condition for its symbol without actually simulating eliminations. Why it works
The elimination process always reduces the structure by removing exactly one robot per non-equal fight, and never creates new symbols or reorders remaining ones. This implies that the only real freedom is in choosing the order of resolving adjacent pairs, not in changing which symbols interact. Because there are only three symbol types, every global configuration can be reduced to reasoning about whether a candidate type can avoid being the losing side in unavoidable interactions. Once a type can avoid being eliminated in every forced interaction path, it can be made the final survivor by directing all other eliminations away from it.
