The key observation is that the answer is monotonic with respect to a threshold value. If we fix a candidate maximum load $X$, we can greedily scan the segment and count how many contiguous groups are needed such that each group sum does not exceed $X$. If we can do it within $k$ groups, then $X$ is feasible; otherwise it is not. This monotonicity allows us to binary search the answer.
