Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain the current grid and track positions of all cars. We also maintain a set of cars already placed in their final positions so they are treated as obstacles.
- Identify all cars and their target positions from the first and fourth rows. We store a mapping from car id to destination cell. This is necessary so we can always test whether a car is ready to be finalized.
- Repeatedly search for a car that is not yet placed and whose destination cell is reachable in the current grid when treating other non-finalized cars as obstacles. We detect reachability using BFS from the car’s current position.
- If no such car exists while there are still unfinished cars, we conclude the configuration is locked and output -1. This captures cyclic dependency situations where every car is blocking another’s only route.
- Once a suitable car is chosen, we compute an explicit shortest path from its current position to its target using BFS that records parent pointers. We reconstruct the path as a sequence of adjacent moves.
- We execute the path step by step, updating the grid after each move and recording the operation. Each move corresponds to sliding the chosen car into an adjacent empty cell.
- After reaching its destination, we mark the car as fixed. From now on, that car becomes an obstacle and will never move again.
- We repeat until all cars are placed or failure is detected.
The key implementation detail is that BFS must reflect the current grid state after each move, because intermediate positions matter for later routes.
Why it works
The correctness rests on the invariant that every time we commit a car to its destination, we never need to move it again. Because we only finalize a car when a valid path exists under the current constraints, we guarantee that this decision does not block future necessary progress beyond recoverability. The grid always retains enough free space in the middle two rows to reroute remaining cars, since at most $2n$ cars occupy a $4n$ grid and sinks continuously remove mobility pressure from the system.
