We can model this as a bipartite-like traversal: cities connect to buses that cover them, and buses connect to all cities on their path, but explicitly expanding is too large. Algorithm Walkthrough

We treat buses as primary traversal objects and use the tree only to test membership and compute intersections.

  1. Precompute depth and binary lifting ancestors for LCA queries on the tree. This allows us to compute distances and test whether a node lies on a tree path in O(1) after preprocessing.

Why it works

Any valid route alternates between being at a city and being inside a chosen bus. Since movement inside a bus is free once boarded, the only cost is switching buses. Compressing each bus to a single traversal step preserves the number of buses used. BFS over this bipartite state space guarantees shortest path in terms of bus transitions because each edge corresponds exactly to boarding a new bus or leaving it at an endpoint, without losing reachability information.
