A naive interpretation would try to simulate, for each node $u$, increasing values of $k$ and repeatedly checking how deep a heap can be formed. This quickly becomes infeasible because each check requires scanning children recursively, leading to at least $O(n^2)$ or worse.

Each check would require aggregating subtree results, costing $O(\deg(u))$ per step and potentially $O(n)$ steps, giving $O(n^2)$ per node in worst cases like a star tree. This is far beyond limits.

The key insight is to reverse the perspective. Instead of fixing $k$, we fix the depth $m$. For a node $u$, ask: how many children have subtree depth at least $m-1$? Let this count be $c_u(m)$. Then $u$ supports depth $m$ for all $k \le c_u(m)$. This converts the problem into counting, for each node and each possible depth level, how many values of $k$ are valid.

This shifts the computation to maintaining, for every node, a multiset of child contributions that can be combined in a greedy manner. The structure becomes similar to computing “how many times can I repeatedly take the $k$-th order statistic from children”.

We then compute for each node a frequency table over achievable depths of its children, aggregate these into a sorted structure, and derive contributions of each depth interval to the final sum. Because depth values per node are at most $O(\log n)$ on average under merging constraints, we can maintain these efficiently using DFS and small-to-large merging or priority-based aggregation.

A leaf can only form a heap of depth 1 regardless of $k$. 4. For an internal node $u$, merge all child multisets $S_v$ into one structure.

The merging step aggregates all possible subtree depths that $u$ can rely on. 5. Convert $S_u$ into a sorted array $a_u$.

Sorting is essential because the heap condition depends only on thresholds like “at least $k$ children”. 6. For each depth threshold $m$, compute how many elements in $a_u$ are at least $m-1$.

This count directly gives the maximum feasible $k$ for which depth $m$ is achievable. 7. Accumulate contribution for node $u$ by summing over all $m$: each depth $m$ contributes $m$ to all $k \le c_u(m)$.

This converts a two-dimensional dependence into interval counting. 8. Merge results upward so that parent nodes reuse already aggregated information.

This ensures each edge is processed only once per merge operation.

Why it works

At every node $u$, the structure of possible heap depths is fully determined by how many child subtrees can support a given depth threshold. The key invariant is that after processing $u$, the multiset $S_u$ correctly encodes all possible subtree depths achievable at $u$. Since the heap condition depends only on counts of children exceeding thresholds, sorting preserves all necessary information, and no structural detail is lost.

Every contribution is counted exactly once because each pair $(u, m)$ is mapped to a unique interval of valid $k$, and these intervals are disjoint in their aggregation.

The variable cnt represents the maximum number of children that can sustain a chain of increasing depth constraints. Once this is computed, the node contributes all valid heap configurations rooted at it through cnt + 1.

The return value compresses the subtree into a simplified representation, keeping only the strongest contributors plus the newly formed depth at the node itself. This prevents exponential growth of stored states.

The recursion limit is increased because the tree can be a long chain, and Python’s default limit would otherwise overflow.
