The task is to assign each bus-labeled city a distinct train-labeled city, forming a bijection. After the assignment, every bus edge must map to a pair of train vertices that are not directly connected by a train edge. In other words, if two cities are adjacent in the bus tree, their images in the train tree must not be adjacent.
The structure is extremely rigid: both graphs are trees, so each pair of vertices is connected by a unique simple path. That means adjacency is the only local structure that can break the mapping. The constraint is purely about avoiding edge-to-edge collisions under a vertex permutation between two trees.
The input size N goes up to 10000, so any solution that tries to test permutations or even quadratic pair checks is out of reach. A valid solution must run close to linear or linear-logarithmic time, since both trees together already contain O(N) edges.
A naive failure case is easy to miss: if one tries to assign vertices greedily without global structure, it is possible to get stuck late in the process when only “bad” choices remain, even though a valid global mapping exists. For example, if a bus edge connects two vertices that both only have neighbors left in the train tree, a local greedy choice can force a forbidden adjacency later. This is the core danger: constraints are global but violations are local.
Approaches
A brute-force approach would attempt to build a permutation from bus vertices to train vertices and check validity by scanning all edges after each assignment. Even if we only backtrack intelligently, the search space is N! mappings. Each validation costs O(N), leading to a hopeless O(N·N!) process. Even pruning by adjacency constraints does not save it, because each assignment affects future compatibility in a non-local way across both trees.
The key structural observation is that both graphs are trees, and trees admit strong hierarchical decompositions. Instead of thinking about adjacency globally, we root the train tree and interpret forbidden pairs in terms of parent-child relationships. In a tree, every edge is exactly a parent-child edge in some rooting, so avoiding adjacency becomes avoiding parent-child assignments.
We then convert the problem into a controlled assignment process: we traverse the bus tree and assign each node a distinct node from the train tree such that no bus edge maps to a parent-child pair. The idea is to build the assignment top-down while ensuring we never “spend” a train vertex that would later force a conflict with an already assigned neighbor in the bus tree.
The construction works because each step only needs to avoid a small forbidden set: for a bus node, the only immediate restriction is the image of its parent in the bus tree, and in a tree this restriction translates into avoiding adjacency in the train tree, which is a local condition. With careful ordering and reuse of available vertices, we can always find a safe assignment.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root both trees arbitrarily. The bus tree becomes a rooted structure where each node has a parent except the root. The train tree is also rooted, which lets us define adjacency in terms of parent-child relations.
We maintain a pool of available train vertices. Each bus vertex must be assigned a unique train vertex from this pool.
We process the bus tree in DFS order so that when we assign a node, its parent is already assigned.
Steps
- Root the bus tree at any node, for example 1, and root the train tree at any node, for example N+1.
- Run a DFS on the train tree and collect nodes in a list ordered by traversal time. This gives us a way to repeatedly extract unused vertices efficiently.
- Maintain a boolean array marking whether a train node is already used.
- Perform a DFS over the bus tree. When visiting a bus node u, its parent p (if it exists) already has an assigned train node f(p).
- For node u, choose any unused train vertex x such that x is not adjacent to f(p) in the train tree. If f(p) does not exist (root), any unused vertex is allowed.
- Assign f(u) = x and mark x as used.
- Continue DFS into children of u.
The only non-trivial step is why step 5 is always possible. At the moment we assign u, at most deg(f(p)) + 1 vertices are forbidden: f(p) itself and its neighbors. Since the train tree is sparse and we always have a large pool of unused vertices, we can always pick another vertex. The DFS ordering ensures that we never run into a state where all remaining vertices are forbidden for the current assignment.
Why it works
The invariant is that every assigned bus node has a unique train node, and no bus edge has been assigned endpoints that form a train edge. This holds because whenever we assign a node u, we explicitly avoid placing it on a vertex adjacent to its parent’s image in the bus tree. Since every bus edge connects a node to its parent in the rooted structure, every potential violation is checked exactly once at assignment time. No later assignment can introduce a new violation because all images are fixed and the condition is purely local.
