Why it works

A run evolves independently between merge events. Its length decreases at a fixed rate determined only by whether it is an edge run or an interior run. Because of this, the only moments when the global structure changes are the moments when some run becomes empty.

The priority queue processes these moments in chronological order. Every merge reconstructs exactly the configuration that would exist after the corresponding number of simultaneous deletion rounds. The linked list maintains the current neighboring runs, and every new merged run receives the correct remaining length at the moment it is created.

Since every structural change in the real process corresponds to one event in the simulation, and every event in the simulation corresponds to a real disappearance, the computed final time equals the number of operations performed by the original process.

The first part compresses the string into maximal equal-color runs. This is essential because points inside a run behave identically until they reach a boundary.

The linked-list arrays left and right allow run deletion in constant time. Physical removal from Python lists would be too expensive.
