Problem Understanding

We have a rectangular board where some cells are already blocked by # and the remaining cells . must be covered by polyominoes. The allowed pieces are extremely flexible: any connected shape consisting of 2, 3, 4, or 5 cells may be used, with arbitrary rotations and reflections.

The output format does not ask us to explicitly place tetrominoes or pentominoes. Instead, every connected piece is represented by a digit. Cells with the same digit belong to the same piece, and two different pieces that touch by side must use different digits.

The real task is much simpler than it first appears. Since every connected figure of size 2 is allowed, we may use only dominoes if we want. Even more importantly, pieces of size 3, 4, and 5 are also available, so there is no restriction on shape beyond connectivity and size.

The board dimensions are at most 1000 x 1000, which means there may be up to one million cells. Any solution that tries complicated backtracking, exact cover, or exponential tiling search is immediately impossible. Even linear scans already touch a million cells, so the intended solution must stay close to O(nm).

The key difficulty is not constructing pieces, but recognizing when construction is impossible.

A dangerous edge case is an isolated empty cell.

A naive flood fill that simply labels connected components would incorrectly accept this case, because the component is connected, but its size is only 1.

Another subtle case is a board that already contains no empty cells.

A more interesting case is a long path.

Any algorithm that greedily pairs cells without considering leftovers can easily leave a single uncovered cell at the end.

The adjacency condition on digits is another easy place to make mistakes. If two different pieces touch by side, their digits must differ. Reusing the same digit for neighboring components creates an invalid coloring even if the tiling itself is correct.

Approaches

The brute-force interpretation is to actually search for a tiling using all possible connected shapes of sizes 2 through 5. Even restricting ourselves to pentomino-like placements leads to enormous branching. A board with one million cells makes any exponential search hopeless.

The reason brute force feels natural is that the statement talks about arbitrary connected figures. But the statement also quietly gives us enormous freedom. Since every connected figure of size 2 is legal, we only need to partition empty cells into connected groups of size at least 2.

That changes the problem completely.

Suppose we look at connected components of empty cells. If a component has size 1, the answer is impossible immediately. Otherwise, any larger connected component can always be partitioned into connected groups of size 2 or 3. In fact, we can build pieces greedily while traversing the component.

There is an even cleaner observation. We do not actually need sophisticated tilings at all. During a DFS or BFS traversal of a connected component, every non-root vertex has a parent. Pairing each vertex with its parent already forms connected pieces of size 2. The only obstacle is odd component size, where one cell remains unmatched. In that case, we merge the leftover with one adjacent pair to create a connected triple.

So the whole problem reduces to graph traversal on the grid graph formed by empty cells.

After constructing the groups, we still need digits such that adjacent groups receive different digits. Since only ten digits exist, we need a bounded coloring argument. Fortunately, each piece has size at most 3 in our construction, so every piece touches only a limited number of neighboring pieces. A greedy coloring with digits 0..9 always succeeds.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Build the grid graph implicitly.

Every empty cell . is a vertex. Two vertices are adjacent if they share a side. 2. Find connected components using DFS or BFS.

If any component has size 1, immediately print -1.

A single cell cannot belong to any valid figure because every figure has at least 2 cells. 3. Construct pieces inside each component.

If the component size is even, pair cells along the DFS tree. Every non-root node gets grouped with its parent.

Each pair is connected because parent and child are adjacent. 4. Handle odd-sized components.

For odd size, pick one node with at least two neighbors in the DFS tree and create one triple from that node and two adjacent vertices.

After removing those three cells, the remaining number of cells becomes even, so the rest can again be paired. 5. Assign a piece id to every cell.

Each pair or triple receives a unique internal component id. 6. Build adjacency between pieces.

Two pieces are adjacent if any cell of one touches any cell of the other by side. 7. Greedily assign digits 0..9.

For each piece, collect digits already used by neighboring pieces and choose the smallest unused digit.

Since each piece is tiny, the number of adjacent pieces is bounded well below 10. 8. Produce the final board.

Blocked cells remain #. Every empty cell prints the digit assigned to its piece.

Why it works

Every connected component with at least two vertices contains a spanning tree. In an even-sized tree, repeatedly pairing parent-child edges covers all vertices. In an odd-sized tree, removing one connected triple leaves an even number of vertices, which can again be perfectly paired.

Every constructed group is connected and has size either 2 or 3, both allowed by the problem.

The coloring step succeeds because a small connected polyomino can touch only finitely many neighboring polyominoes on the square grid. The maximum degree stays below 10, so greedy coloring with ten digits always finds a free digit.

The first part performs DFS traversal over each empty connected component. The traversal records parent relationships so we can later construct connected pairs naturally along tree edges.

The odd-component handling is the most delicate section. We must remove exactly three connected cells first. If the DFS root has at least two children, the root together with two children forms a connected triple immediately. Otherwise, the component is essentially a chain near the root, so we use root -> child -> grandchild.

The reverse traversal order matters. When processing a node, its descendants have already been handled, so pairing a node with its parent never conflicts with previously assigned cells.

The coloring stage works on piece ids rather than cells. We build adjacency between pieces by scanning all grid edges once. A greedy digit assignment is sufficient because the local degree is small.

One subtle boundary condition is the case with no empty cells. Then gid = 0, all loops naturally skip, and the original board is printed unchanged.
