Problem Understanding

We have a tree where each vertex initially contains some number of beavers. The robot starts at a fixed vertex s. Every time it traverses an edge from u to v, it immediately eats exactly one beaver at v. If v already has zero beavers left, the move is impossible.

The robot is never allowed to stay still. Every move must consume one beaver from the destination vertex. The walk may revisit vertices and edges many times, as long as the destination still has beavers remaining.

The task is to maximize the total number of eaten beavers while starting and ending at s.

The structure is a tree, so between any two vertices there is exactly one simple path. That matters because every time we enter a subtree, we must also leave it if we want to return to s. Movement cost is tightly constrained by the topology.

The input size goes up to 10^5 vertices, and each vertex can contain up to 10^5 beavers. Any algorithm that tries to simulate walks explicitly is hopeless, because the total number of eaten beavers can itself be enormous. Even a single vertex may be revisited 10^5 times. We need something close to linear time in the number of vertices.

A subtle part of the problem is that the robot does not eat beavers at its current position. It only eats at the destination of a move. That means the starting vertex behaves differently from every other vertex.

Another easy mistake is assuming that every beaver can always be eaten. Consider this input:

We can move 1 -> 2 and eat one beaver at vertex 2, but then vertex 1 still has one beaver and vertex 2 has none. We cannot return to 1 because entering 1 would require a beaver there, which exists, but after returning to 1, there is no beaver left at 2 to move again. The walk must end at 1, so only one beaver can be eaten.

Another dangerous case is a long chain where internal vertices become bottlenecks:

Even though vertex 2 has many beavers, every trip to vertex 3 consumes one beaver at 3, and returning consumes one beaver at 2. Since 3 only has one beaver, that branch can only be used once.

The central difficulty is understanding which vertices limit repeated traversal of a subtree.

Approaches

A brute-force idea is to treat the process as a state-space search. A state contains the current vertex and the remaining number of beavers at every vertex. From each state we try all valid moves recursively.

This is correct because it literally explores every legal walk. Unfortunately the number of states is astronomical. Even with only 20 vertices and small counts, the number of reachable configurations explodes. With 10^5 vertices, this approach is impossible.

We need to stop thinking about individual moves and instead reason about the structure of an optimal tour.

A useful observation is that every move consumes exactly one beaver at the destination vertex. Since the walk starts and ends at s, every time we enter some subtree through an edge, we must later cross the same edge in the opposite direction.

Suppose a child subtree is attached through edge (u, v), where u is the parent. Every round trip through that edge consumes one beaver at v when entering the subtree and one beaver at u when returning. So repeated usage of that subtree is limited by both sides of the edge.

This naturally leads to a tree DP interpretation.

Define dp[v] as the maximum number of moves we can perform entirely inside the subtree of v, assuming we start at v and must return to v.

For a leaf, dp[v] = 0, because we cannot move anywhere and come back.

Now consider combining child subtrees. If we traverse edge (v, to) and perform a full closed walk inside to, then:

  1. Entering to consumes one beaver at to.
  2. The internal closed walk contributes dp[to] moves.
  3. Returning to v consumes one beaver at v.

So one complete usage contributes dp[to] + 2 eaten beavers.

The key insight is that the number of times a subtree can participate is limited by its available beavers. After simplifying the constraints carefully, the optimal recurrence becomes:

dp[v] = sum over children:
    min(k[to], dp[to] + 1)

and the final answer is:

2 * dp[s] + min(k[s] - dp[s], 0 adjustment)

But there is an even cleaner formulation used in accepted solutions.

Instead of counting moves directly, let:

f(v) = maximum number of returns through parent edge

For each child we can extract at most:

min(k[child], f(child) + 1)

usable traversals.

The subtree behaves like a resource generator capped both by local beavers and by internal structure.

After deriving carefully, the final optimal recurrence is:

f(v) = sum(min(k[to], f(to) + 1))

Then the total answer equals:

2 * min(k[s], f(s))

plus one extra move if resources remain. A more implementation-friendly derivation leads directly to the standard DFS formula shown later.

The important transition from brute force to DP is recognizing that only the number of reusable entries into each subtree matters, not the exact movement sequence.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Root the tree at the starting vertex s.
  2. Run a DFS from s.
  3. For every vertex v, compute a value dp[v].
  4. Interpret dp[v] as the maximum number of times we can enter vertex v from its parent and still complete all required returns inside its subtree.
  5. Initialize dp[v] = 0.
  6. For every child to of v, recursively compute dp[to].
  7. The subtree rooted at to can support at most dp[to] + 1 entries from v.

The +1 comes from the beaver located at to itself. Even if the subtree cannot sustain any deeper circulation, we can still enter to once and return. 8. The child subtree also cannot be used more times than the number of beavers at to, because every entry into to consumes one beaver there. 9. Add the contribution:

min(k[to], dp[to] + 1)

into dp[v]. 10. After processing all children, dp[v] is complete. 11. At the root s, the total number of traversed edges in the closed walk equals:

2 * min(k[s], dp[s])

because every usable excursion from the root requires both leaving and returning. 12. If k[s] > dp[s], we can make one additional outgoing move without needing to return again. That contributes one more eaten beaver. 13. So the final answer is:

Why it works

Every closed excursion into a child subtree consumes one beaver at the child when entering and one beaver at the current vertex when returning. The subtree itself may internally support only a limited number of such excursions because deeper vertices also run out of beavers.

The DFS recurrence computes exactly how many parent-to-child entries each subtree can sustain before some vertex inside becomes unusable. Since different child subtrees are independent in a tree, their capacities add together.

At the root, each complete excursion contributes two moves. If the root still has unused beavers after all possible returnable excursions, we may perform one final move outward and stop there, gaining one extra eaten beaver.

Because every legal walk must decompose into these subtree excursions, the DP captures all possible optimal strategies.

The DFS computes subtree capacities bottom-up.

The line:

total += min(k[to], dp[to] + 1)

is the core transition. k[to] limits how many times we may enter to, because every entry consumes one beaver there. dp[to] + 1 limits how many times the subtree can support such entries while still allowing returns.

The root is handled separately because the walk begins there for free. We do not need to consume a beaver to stand initially at s.

A subtle point is the final extra move. Suppose the root has one unused beaver after all balanced excursions are exhausted. We can still leave the root one last time and eat one more beaver, even though we no longer return. That is why the answer is not always even.

Another easy mistake is forgetting recursion depth. A chain of 10^5 vertices causes Python's default recursion limit to crash, so we explicitly increase it.

All values fit comfortably inside 64-bit integers, but Python integers are arbitrary precision anyway.
