Suppose the original graph has n vertices and m edges. After k merges, the graph has n - k vertices and still m edges. Since loops are allowed in the final graph, every extra edge beyond the tree structure can be absorbed as a loop. The real difficulty is structural: deciding which vertices should collapse together so that the remaining graph becomes a caterpillar.

The constraints are large enough to rule out exponential state search. With n ≤ 2000 and m ≤ 10^5, an O(n^3) solution is acceptable, while anything like subset DP or brute-force partitioning is hopeless. The graph is dense enough that adjacency-matrix style preprocessing is practical.

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Consider a graph consisting of isolated vertices:

The correct answer is 2. A caterpillar must be connected. We can merge all three isolated vertices into one vertex, which is trivially a caterpillar. Forgetting connectivity leads to returning 0.

The answer is 1. Merging any two vertices creates one vertex with a loop and one ordinary edge. The resulting graph is a caterpillar. A careless solution that insists the final graph must be a simple tree would incorrectly reject loops.

The answer is 0. A star is already a caterpillar because the center alone forms the spine path. Any solution that only checks whether the remaining core is a long path after deleting leaves once may incorrectly reject this.

This is also a caterpillar. The spine can be 1-2-3-4, with 5 and 6 attached to 3. A naive degree-based characterization such as “all non-leaf vertices must form a path” works, but only if implemented carefully.

Approaches

A brute-force idea is to try every possible partition of vertices into merged groups. Each group becomes one vertex in the final graph. After constructing the quotient graph, we could test whether it is a caterpillar.

This is correct because every sequence of merges defines a partition of the original vertices. Unfortunately, the number of partitions of an n-element set is the Bell number, which grows super-exponentially. Even for n = 20, this is already impossible.

The structure of the merge operation gives a much stronger viewpoint.

Suppose several original vertices are merged into one final vertex. Then every edge between those vertices becomes a loop, while every edge leaving the set becomes an ordinary edge incident to the merged vertex. The final graph is really a contraction of connected regions of the original graph.

The crucial observation is that minimizing merges is equivalent to maximizing the number of vertices that survive in the final caterpillar. Since every merge reduces the vertex count by exactly one, if the final caterpillar has t vertices, then the answer is:

Find the largest caterpillar obtainable as a minor of the graph.

A caterpillar consists of a spine path, and every other vertex is attached to exactly one spine vertex. This suggests dynamic programming on paths.

Suppose we choose the spine vertices in order. Every vertex not on the spine must be adjacent to some spine vertex and cannot connect multiple distant spine positions, otherwise cycles or branching beyond distance one appear.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Compress the graph into connected components.

Different connected components cannot coexist inside one caterpillar unless merged together. Since merges can connect disconnected parts only by collapsing them into common vertices, we process each connected component independently and later combine the results. 2. For every pair of vertices, compute adjacency information.

We need fast checks for whether a vertex can extend the current spine and whether attachments remain valid. Since n ≤ 2000, adjacency matrices are feasible. 3. Define the spine dynamic programming state.

Let dp[u][v] represent the maximum number of spine vertices in a caterpillar whose spine ends with directed edge u -> v.

The idea is that the current spine path already satisfies the caterpillar condition, and we want to append another vertex. 4. Initialize every edge.

Every ordinary edge can start a spine of length 2. 5. Extend the spine.

Suppose we have a valid spine ending at u -> v. We try every neighbor w of v.

The transition is valid only if adding w keeps the spine simple and preserves the property that non-spine vertices stay within distance one of the spine.

This requires careful bookkeeping of which vertices are already “covered” by the spine. 6. Track side leaves.

Every spine vertex may absorb arbitrary adjacent vertices as leaves. Those leaves never need to appear explicitly in the DP state because they do not affect future transitions. Why it works

The invariant maintained by the DP is that the chosen spine is realizable as the central path of some caterpillar minor of the graph. Every extension preserves path structure because we only append one new endpoint. Every non-spine vertex is required to remain adjacent to the spine, so no vertex ever ends up farther than distance one from the central path.

Any optimal caterpillar has some spine path. Reading that spine from one end to the other produces exactly a sequence of valid DP transitions. Conversely, every DP state corresponds to a realizable caterpillar construction. Since we maximize the number of preserved vertices, the minimum number of merges follows immediately.

The implementation follows the spine-extension idea directly.

The adjacency matrix allows constant-time edge checks. With n = 2000, storing four million booleans is acceptable.

The DP table stores the best spine length ending at each directed edge. Initializing every edge with value 2 corresponds to a spine consisting of exactly two vertices.

The transition attempts to append a neighbor w to the current endpoint v. We avoid immediate backtracking by rejecting w == u.

The final answer subtracts the largest preserved caterpillar size from the original number of vertices.

The most delicate part is interpreting what the DP state means. It is not merely the longest path in the graph. The state represents a valid caterpillar spine, and side vertices are implicitly handled because any neighbor of the spine can serve as a leaf without changing future transitions.

Another subtle point is disconnected graphs. A disconnected graph can never already be a caterpillar, so merges are required to combine components.
