Problem Understanding
We are given a line of floors from 1 to n. We start on floor a and we will make exactly k moves. Each move picks a new floor y different from the current floor x, but with a restriction: we are not allowed to move “too far” in absolute distance compared to a forbidden floor b. Formally, from x we can go to y only if the distance |x − y| is strictly smaller than |x − b|.
After each move we record the visited floor. We are asked how many different sequences of k recorded floors are possible.
The key object is not just the position, but the fact that the set of allowed next moves depends on where b is relative to the current position. If we are far from b, many moves are allowed. If we are close, the allowed region shrinks sharply.
The constraints n, k ≤ 5000 immediately rule out any approach that enumerates sequences explicitly. Even branching roughly n choices per step leads to n^k states, which is astronomically large. A correct solution must reuse overlapping subproblems: many different paths lead to the same floor after the same number of moves.
A subtle edge case appears when the start position is already close to b. For example, if a = b − 1, then the only allowed direction is away from b, and many intermediate positions become impossible. Conversely, if a is far from b, the first move is very flexible but later moves may “trap” the walk into a shrinking region. Any greedy or simulation-based counting will fail because it ignores the combinatorial explosion of different histories that reach the same floor.
Another pitfall is forgetting that sequences are distinguished by their full path, not just the endpoint. Two paths ending at the same floor count separately if their intermediate steps differ.
Approaches
A brute-force strategy would simulate all k-step paths starting from a. From a current floor x, we try all y satisfying the constraint and recursively continue. This is correct in principle because it respects the transition rules exactly. However, the number of states grows like a tree where each node can branch up to O(n), and depth is k. Even with pruning, the number of paths is exponential in k, which is impossible for k up to 5000.
The key observation is that the rule depends only on distances to b, not on the absolute identity of floors. If we know whether a position is to the left or right of b, and how far it is, we can characterize transitions in terms of intervals.
From a position x, all valid moves are exactly those floors that are strictly closer to x than b is. If we define d = |x − b|, then valid destinations are all floors in the interval (x − d + 1, x + d − 1), excluding x itself. This turns each state into transitions over contiguous segments of the line.
Instead of enumerating transitions individually, we maintain a dynamic programming table dp[t][x]: number of ways to be at floor x after t moves. Each state distributes its count over a range of destinations. This is a classic “range update to point query” structure, solvable using a difference array or prefix sums.
For each x, we compute its valid interval [L, R], split around x itself, and add dp[t][x] to all dp[t+1][y] for y in that interval except x. Using a difference array over dp[t+1], each state contributes in O(1), and we reconstruct actual values with a prefix sum.
The transition structure remains linear per layer, so the total complexity becomes O(nk).

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Define dp[x] as the number of ways to be at floor x after the current number of moves. Initially, dp[a] = 1 because we start at a single known position.
- For each step from 1 to k, create a new array ndp initialized to zero. This will accumulate all transitions for the next move.
- For every floor x, compute its allowed movement radius d = |x − b|. This determines how far we can move away from x.
- Convert this into an interval of valid destinations: all y such that |x − y| < d, which becomes y ∈ [x − d + 1, x + d − 1], excluding x itself.
- Instead of adding dp[x] to every y individually, perform a range update on ndp using a difference array: add dp[x] at the left boundary and subtract it after the right boundary, splitting around x to exclude it.
- After processing all x, take a prefix sum over ndp to reconstruct actual counts for each floor.
- Replace dp with ndp and continue to the next step.
After k iterations, sum is not needed because every dp[x] already represents complete sequences ending at x, and the answer is the sum over all x.
Why it works
At each step, dp[x] aggregates all distinct histories that end at x. The transition rule depends only on x and b, not on how x was reached. This makes the process Markovian: all paths merging at x become indistinguishable except for their count. Range updates preserve exact multiplicities because each dp[x] is distributed independently to all valid next positions. The exclusion of x ensures no invalid self-loops are counted.

The dp array represents the distribution of paths after each move. The difference array encodes range additions for each starting floor, and the prefix sum reconstructs actual values efficiently.
The split around x is the most delicate part. A single interval [L, R] includes x, so we compensate by subtracting dp[x] only at position x while keeping the rest of the interval intact.
All arithmetic is performed modulo 1e9+7 to prevent overflow and match the problem requirement.

Edge Cases
One important edge configuration occurs when x is exactly one step away from b. For example n=5, b=3, x=2. Here d=1, and the condition |x-y| < 1 allows no integer y at all. The DP correctly produces zero contributions from such states, because the computed interval collapses and the difference update cancels everything.
Another case is when x is far from b, such as x=1 and b=n. Then d is large and almost the entire range is allowed except x itself. The range update handles this cleanly by applying a full interval and subtracting at x, ensuring all valid destinations receive the same contribution without double counting.
