Problem Understanding
We start with a collection of axis-aligned segments. Every segment is either horizontal or vertical, and segments of the same orientation never overlap.
We are allowed to delete whole segments or only parts of them. After all deletions, the remaining drawing must satisfy three conditions.
The remaining shape must be connected.
The remaining shape must contain no cycle.
Every endpoint that still exists must have integer coordinates.
Among all such shapes, we want the largest possible total remaining length.
A useful way to think about the drawing is as an intersection graph.
Each original segment becomes a graph vertex.
Whenever a horizontal and a vertical segment intersect, we add a graph edge.
Two segments belong to the same connected piece of the drawing exactly when they belong to the same connected component of this graph.
The constraints are what make the problem difficult. There are up to 2 * 10^5 segments. A naive check of every horizontal segment against every vertical segment would require about 10^10 intersection tests in the worst case, which is completely impossible inside a two-second limit.
The geometry also hides a subtle issue. We are allowed to remove only integer-length pieces. If two segments intersect at an integer lattice point and we want to destroy that intersection, the cheapest possible operation removes a segment piece of length 1. Removing less is forbidden because all remaining endpoints must stay on integer coordinates.
Consider this example:

A careless solution might think that breaking one graph edge costs nothing because an intersection is only a point.
That is not true. To eliminate the intersection, we must cut away at least one unit of segment length. The optimal answer is 6 - 1 = 5.
Another easy mistake is forgetting that disconnected components can never be connected later.

The best connected acyclic drawing is simply one of the segments, so the answer is 1, not 2.
A third trap appears when many intersections belong to the same already-connected component. Every such extra intersection creates another cycle and costs another unit of length.
A solution that only counts connected components but ignores cycle creation will overestimate the answer.
Approaches
The natural brute-force idea is to build the intersection graph explicitly.
For every horizontal segment and every vertical segment, check whether they intersect. If they do, add a graph edge.
Then, for every connected component:
score =

The cycle count can be computed as:
cycles = E - V + 1
inside a connected component.
This graph interpretation is correct, but it immediately runs into trouble.
If there are 10^5 horizontal segments and 10^5 vertical segments arranged as a full grid, the graph contains roughly 10^10 intersections. Even writing those edges down is impossible.
The key observation is that we never need to process every intersection separately.
Suppose a vertical segment intersects many horizontal segments.
While sweeping from left to right, all currently active horizontal segments are known.
If several neighboring active horizontal segments already belong to the same DSU component, then processing every intersection individually is wasteful.
Connecting the vertical segment to the first one merges the component.
All later intersections with the same component only create cycles.
So instead of storing active horizontal segments one by one, we store maximal contiguous ranges of active horizontals that belong to the same DSU component. The editorial calls such a range a chunk.
Now a vertical segment can process an entire chunk at once.
The DSU maintains:

Whenever two previously separate DSU components become connected, their scores are merged.
Whenever an intersection appears inside an already connected DSU component, we subtract one from the component score because one unit of segment length must eventually be removed to destroy the new cycle.
The sweep-line plus chunk compression reduces the complexity from quadratic to roughly O(n log n).

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Split the input into horizontal and vertical segments.
- Create three event types:
- horizontal segment starts,
- vertical segment is processed,
- horizontal segment ends.
- Sort all events by x-coordinate.
- Maintain an ordered structure of active chunks. A chunk stores:
- lowest y,
- highest y,
- DSU representative.
- When a horizontal segment starts, insert a singleton chunk corresponding to its y-coordinate. If that y-coordinate lies inside an existing chunk, split the chunk first.
- When a horizontal segment ends, remove its y-coordinate from the active structure. This may split a chunk into two smaller chunks.
- When a vertical segment is processed, find all chunks intersecting its y-range.
- Count how many different DSU components appear among those chunks.
- Merge the vertical segment with each distinct component exactly once.
- Every additional intersection inside an already connected DSU component creates one extra cycle. Subtract one from the component score for each such cycle.
- After all events are processed, every DSU root stores the optimal score of its connected component.
- The answer is the maximum score among all DSU roots.
Why it works
Inside one connected component, every intersection edge that joins two previously separate DSU sets is necessary for connectivity.
Every later intersection whose endpoints are already connected creates exactly one new cycle.
Destroying such a cycle requires removing at least one unit of segment length, and removing exactly one unit is always sufficient because all intersection coordinates are integers.
The DSU score therefore tracks:
total segment length

number of redundant intersections
which is exactly the maximum retainable length of that connected component.
The sweep-line structure guarantees that all intersections are accounted for, but groups together large batches of already-connected horizontal segments. This avoids processing intersections individually.

The DSU stores the current score of every connected component. Initially that score is simply the total segment length contained in the component.
When two components become connected, their scores are added together.
When an intersection closes a cycle, the sweep-line logic subtracts one from the score of the corresponding DSU root. That subtraction represents the mandatory unit-length deletion needed to break the cycle.
The technically difficult part of the implementation is not the DSU. It is the active chunk structure. Its job is to compress long runs of active horizontal segments that already belong to the same DSU component, so a vertical segment can process an entire run in logarithmic time.
Without that compression, the worst-case grid would still require processing billions of intersections.
