Problem Understanding
We need to place the integers from 1 to n * m into an n × m grid so that every pair of side-adjacent cells differs by at least 2. Two cells are adjacent only if they share an edge, diagonal neighbors do not matter.
The grid must contain every number exactly once. The task is purely constructive: either build one valid arrangement or prove that no arrangement exists.
The limits are very small. At most we place 100 * 100 = 10000 values, so even an O(nm) or O(nm log(nm)) construction is trivial. What matters is discovering the pattern, not optimizing runtime.
The dangerous part of the problem is that many arrangements look almost correct but fail because two consecutive numbers become neighbors. A row-major fill,

already fails immediately because 1 and 2 are adjacent.
Another subtle case is the single-row or single-column grid. For example:
1 4
needs a permutation of [1,2,3,4] where consecutive values are not adjacent in the line. A careless 2D construction may work for larger grids but break completely when one dimension equals 1.
The smallest impossible cases are also easy to miss. Consider:

The only possible layouts are [1 2] or [2 1], and both contain adjacent consecutive values. The same happens for 2 × 1.
The 1 × 1 grid is valid because there are no adjacent pairs at all:

Approaches
The brute-force idea is straightforward. Generate every permutation of the numbers from 1 to nm, place them into the grid, and check whether every neighboring pair differs by more than 1.
This works because the condition is easy to verify. For each cell we only inspect up to four neighbors. The problem is the number of permutations. Even for a 3 × 3 grid we would need to test 9! = 362880 arrangements. For a 4 × 4 grid the search explodes to 16!, which is completely impossible.
The key observation is that the actual values do not matter individually. The only forbidden situation is placing consecutive numbers next to each other. That suggests separating consecutive numbers as much as possible.
A classic trick for such constructions is to reorder the sequence itself. If we arrange all odd numbers first and all even numbers after them, consecutive integers become far apart in the sequence:

Every adjacent pair inside this sequence differs by at least 2.
Now imagine writing this reordered sequence into the grid row by row. Horizontal neighbors become adjacent elements in the reordered sequence, so they are safe automatically.
Vertical neighbors are more delicate. If the row length is at least 2, then vertically adjacent cells correspond to positions separated by at least two places in the reordered sequence. Because the sequence groups parity blocks together, these vertical differences also avoid 1.
This construction works for every grid except a few tiny impossible cases.

Why it works
Inside a row, neighboring cells correspond to consecutive elements of the reordered sequence. Since the sequence places all odds first and all evens second, consecutive sequence elements differ by at least 2.
For vertical neighbors, their positions in the sequence differ by exactly m. When m ≥ 2, moving down skips at least one intermediate value in the sequence. Because the sequence is parity-grouped, consecutive integers never align vertically either.
The only failures happen in the tiny one-dimensional cases where there is no room to separate consecutive numbers.

The first part handles the impossible configurations explicitly. Only 1 × 2 and 2 × 1 fail. Every larger grid admits a construction.
The sequence generation is the core idea. We append all odd numbers first, then all even numbers. This guarantees that neighboring elements in the sequence are never consecutive integers.
The grid fill is intentionally simple. Since the sequence itself already avoids bad local transitions, row-major placement preserves the property horizontally. Vertical safety follows from the structure of the sequence and the grid dimensions.
One subtle point is that we do not need any special handling for 1 × m when m > 2. For example:

already works perfectly as a single row.
Another easy mistake is attempting to alternate parity cell by cell. That can accidentally place 2 next to 3 at row boundaries. Using one global reordered sequence avoids this issue naturally.

This seems problematic at first glance, which exposes an important detail: the naive odd-even row-major fill is actually invalid for 2 × 3.
We need the standard constructive arrangement used in accepted solutions. The correct idea is to reorder rows or columns depending on parity.
A valid arrangement is:

This suggests a stronger construction strategy.
The reliable method is to construct permutations for rows and columns independently.
For dimensions at least 4, we can permute indices as:
1 3 5 ... 2 4 6 ...
Then place values according to these reordered coordinates.
